Hi There,

Just abt to purchase a new graphics card for my new(ish) pc, Currently have a 8800GT but upgraded to a 22' monitor and need a card to play at 1080p res's

Now after consideration it has come down between 2 cards, The 5770 or the 5850, Now i do shy away from buying top of the range purely because the prices are overly inflated. my budget will allow for a 5850 but i see the 5770 is about hundred quid cheaper, Basically want to play at 1080p res's.

any opinions?

i could play most things @ 1920x1080 on medium to high with my single HD5770 and pretty much everything on max with the 2 of them getting playable fps. personally i would get the best that fits into your budget, the HD58** range SHOULD be better than than the HD57** range so if your budget stretches then get the HD58**, but if you will be pushing it to get that and there are other things you would like to spend the difference on, then the HD57** range is still very good.

yeah im playing a lot of older games with my 8800GT on medium settings and do want to max the settings out, Also if the 5850 comes down in price some more over the next year i could add another one in if need be, the 5770 sounds great value for money, cant remember the last time i spent 130 quid on a GPU!!! The last time i built a PC with said 8800GT and a overclocked E2180 the first game i tried was Crysis and i was gutted it would only play it in medium specs haha, want to avoid that if possible.

On a separate note, If i buy another 5850 later on, Do i need to get the same manufacturer/card or can you use a different card?

nope, you can x-fire ANY HD58** card with any other HD58** card, doesnt even have to be a HD5850, but both cards will always run at the slowest cards settings.

Will be having a go at overclocking, One of the main reasons i bought a Q6600 G0 stepping CPU as these are really good for Oc'ing. What amazes me is how good the overclocks are nowadays! i mean real big differences as long as you know what you are doing.
