hi guys, this is my 1st post, so pls accept my apologies, if i make any mistakes.

I have just bought the following components to build my pc:-

AMD II Phenom x4 955 Retail
Kingston 2gb Ddr3 1333mhz Hyperx Memory Cl7(7-7-7-20)
MSI 770-C45 AMD 770
HIS HD 5770 1GB DDR5
Samsung SH-S223 22X
Powwa 600W 12cm Fan >80% High Efficiency PSU
Black/Silver Mid Tower Case with Front Panel Temperature LCD

I built the whole system, but when i power up, the cpu fan works, but there is no bleeping sound or any display at all. FYI the case has no internal fans, but i just want to test that the rest of components are okay.

I have also taken out everything, including gfx card, but i left the cpu, mobo and when i took out the memory, this is the only time when i hear the MEMORY NOT INSTALLED beeps.

FYI, the motherboard has no troubleshooting guide, although it has these 4 leds, that tell the installer that the CPU has gone from phase 1 to 4 and these are all lit.

What could be the problem?

thanks for your help

thanks for ur fast reply cat.

unfortunately, i have only 1 stick. Could u kindly check for me that this mobo is compatible with the cpu and memory? I've got my suspicions that the memory maybe incompatible and if that is the case, then at least i can order another module.

Forgive me if I have misunderstood your post - but from what I think you said:- you have left out the graphics card to test and only have the cpu and memory fitted to the board - if this is correct you will not get a post as the graphics card has to be in the machine for obvious reasons - nothing to handle display.

Also try 1 stick of memory at a time to see if it then boots. You could also try re setting the cmos by taking the battery out fot about 3 mins and then put it back in. let us know how you get on. Do you get output on your screen? If so you may need to check things are set right in the bios.

sorry tipes,

my fault for not explaining.

1. I first built and tried the system with everything, including gfx card, cpu and ram (i only have one 2gb dd3 stick). I got no output sound or display, although the cpu fan was working.

2. I then took out the gfx card and booted again, but the result was same as above.

3. I then took out the ram and this is when i got the beeps.

I haven't tried taking out the CMOS battery, but i'm worried incase i mess it up. I'm thinking that eithier the CPU or MEMORY is incompatible with the motherboard.

Have just checked for you - the memory and cpu should be fine with that board. Try re seating the cpu and check for bent pins as that could be a problem. If not you could still try re setting the bios to see if that kicks it in to life. Could the psu be faulty - not sure which psu you have from your description.

Can you borrow a stick of known working ddr3 memory from a mate to test with? Suspect the ram could indeed be faulty.

hi guys, sorry for the late reply.

I just tried the following:-

1. Shorted the battery to reset bios - still the same

2. Tried the ram in different slots - still the same

If it was the CPU, for example pins, then surely the motherboard would not light up it's LEDs to say the CPU has reached to PHASE 4?

Oh and btw, when i take out ram though, the motherboard gives long beeps a few times and then stops.

It does sound like mem to me since you only get beeps when it's removed. If it was cpu i'd expect either no beeps at all or beeps all the time, still may be worth a check though as long as you have fresh thermal paste.

Without spare RAM or a spare board to test you can't be certain but I'd be looking at RMAing the RAM if it was me

Same here. Doesn't sound good for the RAM :(

I am afraid I agree - short of having known good ram to test the theory maybe time to rma the ram.

Looking at the specs for the RAM have you got the dual channel stick or the triple channel? Or god forbid the single channel one?

Reading through the manual your MB is dual channel memory and the single stick should be placed in DIMM 1 ie. the one closest to the CPU, to ensure successful boot.

ATB :)

HELLO GUYS!!! :D:D:D:D

I bet you can tell why i'm grinning. Thanks to Tipes's advice, i took off the heatsink and guess what??? the cpu came out with it and was stuck under the heatsink, because some of it's pins were not seated properly. Now that explains why i was getting no beeps with everything in as the cpu was not even connected properly. :o

I reseated the cpu, put the heatsink back on, ram in, gfx card in and TA-RA!! It works PERFECT! ;):)

I feel a bit stupid as i should have checked, but i guess i need to be extra careful next time...sorry for wasting your time.

There is one thing though...because the cpu was stuck under the heatsink, I had to forcefully lever it off by using a screwdriver. When i did this, it came off, but it fell out of my hand onto the carpet with the thermal paste on it. So since it was dirty with carpet fluff, i cleaned it with CPU Solvent. The heatsink had only a small amount left. I plugged it back and the CPU temperature in the bios shows as 34C - 37C idle. Is this temperature okay for stock heatsink?

Hi,

Glad to be of service and glad that you have at last found out what the annoying problem was - I know these situations can be very frustrating - well done for sticking with it and seeing it through. I am no expert on the amd chips but those idle temps sound ok ish to me - perhaps someone else can chime in to confirm on that.

Cheers

Hi there, i have the same cpu mate and with the stock heatsink yes those temps are absolutely fine. btw if ur after better cooling, i bought the thermolab baram cpu cooler for like £30 and my temps on that cpu are now 26-27C idle. not to be sniffed at, for an air cooler anyways.

thanks tipes and sponge999.

@ sponge999 - the only website i buy from is www.******.com and they don't have any of those coolers in stock. For the moment its not important as i don't plan to o/c yet.

thanks very much again...i really appreciate it.
