NVIDIA GTX 480 makes benchmarking debut, matches ATI HD 5870 performance (video)

What confuses me about that video his he goe's on about the nice LED yet we never get to see the front case of the card if u ask me nvidia is up to something fishy

I'm not sure what graph you lot are looking at and to be fair I haven't read the article, but just from glancing the 480 doesn't match the 5870, it thrashes it's average FPS. Especially at that resolution where it's always tough to seperate the pack. Given that and the fact ATI have had months optimizing their drivers it's a no brainer that the 480 will smoke the 5870.

Also, i'm not really sure where the 5970 comes into this. ATI were allowed a couple of months to release their dual GPU solution and you know Nvidia are going to follow suit. Surely the 480 is to compete with the 5870, not the ludicrous 5970 no one can afford or need!

I am not a fan boy, in fact I find ATI and Nvidia intolerable. Do let me know if i'm wildly wrong as I am just making this up off the top of my head and I have flu :(

:(

Problems:

1. Nvidia using no AF and no AA. Why? I'll wait and see the comparisons with 16xaf and aa.

2. My 5850 has huge peaks and often at 90fps+ yet none in that benchmark of Nvidia.

3. they are using a heavily modified/improved benchmark 1.1 so the arument about time to optimise is not true. Both sides have had the same time.

4. No sign of which driver used for the 5870 so it may well be a very old one.

5. There will never be dual core 480GTX on the current die size. That would need almost 600W for the card alone and would need 3 x 8 pin connectors and one 6 pin. I dread to even imagine the size of the beast and the cooler which would be needed on it. The world's first tri slot card anybody? I would expect atleast one refresh and a die shrink to 28nm before we see dual gpu from Nvidia.

6. Ati matched the previous generations performance of the dual core gtx295with it's 5870. Now with Nvidia being so late, people are expecting their single core card to match ATI dual core card. And since Nvidia can't make a dual core card to compete, comparisons between the 5970 and the gtx480 will always be made especially since they are likely to be the same price or the gtx480 more expensive.

my decision to buy a second 5870 for £250 is now looking better and better because ati are not going to drop their prices on the 5870 if nvidias flagship only just matches it lol

i'm looking forward to when thease new cards hit the shelfs altho i prob won't buy one unless the pricing is right

Who are ATi? whats with all the numbers you often quote? 58 somthing.

(My Nvidia Fan Boyish Nesh is slowly but surely melting away) :(

Jeez im still waiting to buy a dx11 card and this really does nothing to sway me.

5850 is still the most price effective card after nearly 6 months....

I hope ATi releases something crushing but well priced as they finally release these woefully late nvidia offerings

+1

Well not exactly... anyone can release one.

I've never had anything but nvidia, but if all these projections are true, i may have to buy my first ati card.

Has anyone looked at minimum framerates?

If 5800's average higher fps, but fermi average better minimums, i think i'd prefer to have better minimums tbh

Usually some dodgy benchies are released on Chinese sites before the NDA lifts, but the methodology and test setup always leaves a lot to the imagination.

Best to wait for [H], anands, toms, xbit etc before making judgement.

thing is their card comes out 6 months after ATI of course they have improved it to beat ATI.. if the Nvidia have released "the new" cards before ATI, ATi could improve their card performance to make it better than Nvidia... i dont see a point in high end cards really.. always buy best bang for buck doesn't matter its ATi or Nvidia

I'm sure we all try to follow this, but sometimes we have a preference.
