Over heating

I'm not trying to be a horrible, but how possibly can you try to give advice

I think this every time I read one of his posts :( I think its great he shares his opinions on motoring with us, because everyone is entitled to an opinion, but when people ask for advice on issues they are having or things relating to motoring in the UK he really needs to be sure what he is saying is actually correct, because more often than not it isnt :(

You shouldn't need Google to tell you what the normal operating temperature, it is just something you should know. The widely accepted range is 90c +/- 5c or "the Middle of the gauge".
I'm struggling to see how anybody can be dishing out advice on engine cooling systems when they are quite happy to see their car operating in the Mid 65s on a motorway journey...
Just to clarify, I don't have a gauge, I only have a computer screen telling me the EXACT temperature over 50, or if it's under 50, it'll just say cold... I assumed this was fine as I haven't driven any other car long enough, to care about/look at the engine temp, and I never drove a car with a gauge which also has temps on it ( eg. in my dads car it's simply high at the top low at the bottom and the gauge is about halfway all the time). But I had no reason to think something was wrong with it.

I guess I agree to the rest of you post, and I'll try to be more careful...

LOL it gets to 95 degrees, the fans cut in and you think the head gaskets are going, just lol

That's what the fans are designed to do, he said it cooled down again straight away.

I said START of possible HGF, read what I wrote, yeah your right the fans cut in at that temp as they are meant to, its not to say that the HG doesn't have a tiny pinprick in it.
I wonder what temp it would get to if the fans didn't cut in.

If it's going over 95 yes but if it's under 85 after it's warmed up then its probably the themostat stuck open.

This does depend a little on the car so take with a pinch of salt. I think on my M5 for example, the thermostat opens and closes at 79 degrees.

Thanks for everyones input,

The car has now gone back to its normal behavior - temperature right at the bottom of the gauge, which on closer inspection actually starts at 70.

But it seems unlikely that the engine is really at that temperature.
Really hope it isn't the head gasket as this engines only been in a few months after I destroyed my last one. I drive fairly gently, wouldn't say I over stress the car.

Is best course of action to get stat replaced (is this hard, expensive) and not worry, or should I be really troubled at the thought of my 200 mile drive tonight?

I should point out that despite my comment above saying a temperature such as 79 could be normal, 70 seems way too low and it does seem likely your thermostat is stuck open!

Well it survived my return journey but has now developed another behaviour pattern, fan came on in the same stretch of roadworks that it initially began getting warm on and then stayed on for the next 100 miles, tempreture sat at the bottom of the gauge the whole time.

I'll be able to get it looked at this week and hopefully it wont cost me too much.
