Ladies, Gents and fellow geeks, let me start off by saying hello, new to this forum, was pointed to OCUK by a mate. im updating my system to the following.

Asus Rampage II Gene Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 microATX Motherboard [90-MIB850-G0EAY00Z]

Intel Core i7 975 3.33Ghz (Nehalem) Extreme Edition (Socket LGA1366) - Retail [BX80601975]

CoolIT Eco A.L.C. High-Performance CPU Watercooler (Socket AM2/AM2+/AM3/LGA775/LGA1156/LGA1366)

2 x OCZ Obsidian 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600Mhz Triple Channel Kit

2 x OCZ Vertex Limited Edition 100GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive

2 x Akasa Dual 2.5" SSD/HDD Mounting Kit [AK-MX010]

and running my 8800 GTX OC (if thats right) kinda new to Spec'd PC's, more of a cellar dweller at the server end.

i have done some research on all the parts but the thing that is bugging the grey matter is the cooler, i have bought iBox Cube micro atx case (half price at mates rates ;) ) so silent cooling i would normally put in a regular sized box wont fit so i found the one above on here.

anybody have any comments on what im planning to do or see anything with the cooling.

your comments are welcomed and appreciated, this is around £1922+ of kit and would rather not make a silly mistake at that price,

thanks

Eddie. :D:D:D:D

Have you thought of going for the i7 930 chip rather than the 975 which will save £600 ~ and overclocking the chip to a higher speed.

after speaking with my mate OC may not be an option with the cooling issue, dont think i can get something big enough to cool it OC'd, dont get me wrong im not being a flash harry here and as its my first decent upgrade would like as much help from experience as possible, few points i have thought of but could be corrected lol

1. i dont like the idea of OC'ing as its above what i guess they say is the optimum usage for life.

2. i have the money set aside and although saving 600 is good, having to shell out more later as i have burnt the cpu out because of the cooling issues doesnt do it for me

ofcourse im just throwing all this out there and am open to suggestions from those ahead of the game on me,

thanks

Hi Eddie,

We offer overclocked bundles you could buy, save buying the 975 and buy a 930 @ 4.2Ghz from us it will save you money and be much faster.

Also any reason for 12GB of memory? It wont offer you any advantages in games over 6GB and the only time i'd suggest going for it would be if you did any type of photo or video editing work.

on a side note please do not try and circumvent the competitor name removal tool, first and last warning ;). I have edited your original post to remove it.

Phil

You could easily take a 930 and run it at 975 speeds. It wont even be a challenege to do lol. Most 920s only start having problems after 3.6GHz.

It isnt as daunting as it may seem but would be well worth it. You could put that extra £600 into a graphics update to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the system.

There is plenty of guides and help ready here on the forums.

sound advice all round few answers from me,

12gb ram is mostly for the vmware/vsphere, video stuff i do

the 930 sounds good i guess but again back to the cooling in a shuttle case, totally strapped for space

gonna have to double check my graphics card when i get home to find out what it is exactly, may even be a 9800 BFG OC GTX, really cant remember

what graphics do you suggest with the rest of the money, its a terrible circle with me when it comes to graphics, i cant justify buying expensive graphics as i dont play all that much and i dont play all that much because my graphics are tonk lol may just bite the bullet and shell out with the saving, assuming the cooling is not an issue

the monitor i will be using it on is a Hanns G 26" HDMI Screen

thanks again phil and Bigbc, it was not intentional to circumvent the competitor removal tool per say as i didnt know thats what it was, other forums prefer things like M$ to the full way of saying it as they would rather not have that attention from search engines but fair point, banged to rights, wont happen again mate

As for cooling you could go for a Corsair H50 and put the radiator outside of the back of the case, it would be quiet and cool and internally not take up much space, you might have to make some holes in the rear of the case to pass the cooling tubes through if your okay with that I can recommend it for keeping things cool and quiet

12GB is far enough then for vsphere mate, but you need to be careful with compatibility as vsphere is designed for enterprise environments and doesn't have particularly good desktop support, so please do your homework!

If its all going into a shuttle i would avoid the overclock then or only do a mild one, like upto 3.4Ghz which is very easy to achieve

Phil

You could go for the 930, and get 2 sets of these.
OCZ ram is still very good but these have faster speed + lower latency :)
And the Cooler could be a Corsair H50, they're quieter, and I've seen them be cooler too.

Im all over that mate, i use vmware server on windows 7 ultimate x64 then run a vm that has vsphere on, its what we use in work so its just for tinkering, i have vm's that run in vsphere that run in vmware, backward i know but as i said its only testing and tinkering

did look at the H50 but the reviews said it runs hot, have plenty of room for that on the back as have a blank fan hole that can be poked out to mod it.

and i like the ram and will probably buy that with the 930 then

my graphics card is a BFG 8800 GTX should i be looking at upgrading it, im scoring 6.9 in windows but want a total 7.9 all round

cheers fellas

That depends what you really want to do with it. If you do game then the 8800 will be the bottleneck. A 5770 is a nice cheap replacement with a 5850 being its bigger/better bro.
If you dont do much gaming then the 8800 is a very capable card.

sound information, thanks very much, will see what the funds are like once i tot up the new spec, have to do that at work as 16kb link is a bit hard to browse the internet but in afghanistan im happy that i have even that,

thanks again to all, seems like im set less anyone throws a spanner in the works lol. :D:D:D:D:D

Agree with all the comments, i would suggest Buy yourself an Nvidia 265/275 OR an ATi 5750, Just to keep the specs on even grounds.

Wow, 7.9 all round :O

In order, I have:

7.5
7.5
6.0
6.0
5.9

So anything more/Better, will be higher, like an SSD, will be atleast 7 for the 5.9 score I have :)

Like others have said lose the 975...you can get a chip running faster than that at stock voltages, so temps only increase a bit.
if your not planning on clocking over 3.6, a h50 will be ample or even a decent low profile air cooler.
Ive gone from a huge case to a small one, and its quieter. the only warning i give you is that the Genes NB runs very very hot and needs some active cooling.

The only problem i can see here is if the I7 930 is used then he needs to make sure that new coolit Eco cooler fits in that case as you need higher end cooling when OC'ing in any instance , especially in his situation and the small environment the components will be working in.

I tried a SFF a while back with the 920 and a SilverStone Sugo SG02 , temps far to hot for my liking , then i could not fit a decent after market cooler. ?

Just something to think about.
