The feasibility of introducing the food tax is being raised informally between civil servants, industry bodies and retail insiders.

So politically-sensitive is the move that all the talks are occurring "under the radar", according to retail industry insiders.

when i first read the article, frankly, i thought not a bloody hope in hell how ever, now that ive had time to think about it, i'm not so sure.

given the god awful state of the UK's finances, clearly money does & will need to be raised to tackle the mess somehow, now if Labour manages to scrape a win in the next election, would they take the view that they've got nothing left to lose by grasping the nettle & putting vat on food stuffs, even if it's only targeted " unhealthy " foodstuffs?.

i can't help but think that financial circumstances might well force there hands. even if it would be political suicide.

Will never happen.

There's already VAT on some foodstuffs, but not on common groceries. The poor would suffer and Labour would never allow that!

Tax something you need to survive?

it's being "considered" so clearly the unthinkable is being thought, like i said, financial circumstances might force there hands, even if it's only to the extent of raising taxes on "unhealthy" food options.

A bit of pre-election nonsense from the Telegraph. If a government wants to start a revolution in this country they will tax food. It won't happen.

But unhealthy food is the cheapest stuff :/ , there is a reason lots of poor people are chubby, not everyone can afford decent food.

These ******** would tax air if they could get away with it.

Coming from the guy from Ireland :p, how much have your TD's stolen? :D

Obesity can be compared to smoking in terms of health problems. So yes I think taxing food seems logical. Of course then you'd only want to tax unhealthy food - so fruit, veg, grains, etc should be exempt.
