As title i plan on upgrading my graphics card in april and was wondering if that upgrade is worth it.
My specs:
PII X4 3.4GHz
4gb ram
280GTX
win 7 64bit
1920x1200

You may want to offload your 280 now while they are still making good money, when fermi hits the 200 range will nose dive big time. Come April I would go for a 5850 " cheapest you can find " and overclock it for 5870 perofrmance, best bang for buck.

Nope keep your 280 it's just not worth it and a side step at best. Considering the cost outlay 280gtx + 200 quid for a 5870 witch 15 to 20% faster.

LoL sidestep, I push your TRI SLI 280's in crysis and most other games with one 5870, hardly a sidestep, well I suppose an NV fan4ever would suggest that  I suggest the OP go look at reviews of the 5870 which show it to firmly smash the 285, even more so if you like 8xAA.;) oh and DX11, oh and way less power draw....side step..muhahaha

a 5870 is really that more powerful:eek:

Petty my cards are water cooled, yeah a sidestep, hes going to get what 150 quid for his 280, hes going to need what 100 quid on top of that to get a 5850, is the 5850 100 quid faster than a 280, I don't think so, its not a worth while upgrade.

as for calling me an Nvidia fan boi HA, I very much doubt it lol I would have ATI or Nvidia depending on what gave me the best performance for my budget,

If I was upgrading from what an 9800gtx or 4870 I would buy an ATI card 5850/5870 right now.

The cost of the upgrade relative to the performance increase...and the upgrade just being a pointless sidestep are two very different things.

I should have worded it better, but the out lay of upgrading isnt worth it, there is no doubt the 5 series is better than anything Nvidia have to offer.

If my card died and I was out of warranty I would by a 5 series card in a flash.

If the op feels that it's worth the upgrade, than it's up to him and go for it.

Fact: a 5870 beats a gtx285 and is within 5% of a gtx295

Fact: A 5850 will overclock easily to a speed which beats a 5870 at stock so hence is faster than a gtx295.

Fact: At the same overclocked speed a 5870 is only 5 - 6% faster than a 5850 at best. Some games it's even.

Fact: Since a 5870 or overclocked 5850 is on par with a gtx295 which is really a hybrid 2 x gtx275 then it will be on par to two gtx280 in SLI.

So if you think the performance from gtx280 in SLI isn't worth the upgrade cost then don't bother. If the numbers stack up then BUY. BUY, BUY.

Im considering a similair sort of upgrade. My gtx 280 died, got a gtx 275 as a replacement, this died too. Im now waiting on another 275 arriving, currently running an 8800gt, considering selling this along with the replacement 275 to fund a 5870.
