VAT on food being considered.

great vat set to be 20% SO THATS a 20% jump in your food bills

I'm not sure where you're getting that figure from but there are different rates of VAT, the current 17.5% for instance is on "standard" goods or services, there's reduced rate (currently at 5%) so domestic heating fuels etc and then there's zero rated which applies to most foodstuffs (apart from "luxury" items like alcohol, crisps etc) and finally there's the category of exempt which means no VAT can possible be charged without a change in the categorisation.

At the moment an increase to 20% VAT as the standard rate is only mooted, it's one possible way to raise money within the UK but there are doubtless others. There is no suggestion as far as I'm aware that all food should be changed from zero rated to standard rated and certainly not to 20% - even the article only suggests 3-5%. I'm not commenting on whether changing foodstuffs from zero rated to actually having a VAT cost is a good thing, at the moment I'm just pointing out that what you've suggested is not supported by the evidence presented so far.

Glad i have no VAT here...

But we still get taxed on some stuff :( (there pushing for an extra 55p a litre tax on fuel this year over here  )

I'd happily see ready meals and pre processed crap taxed to high heavens.
But putting tax on the fresh healthy food that people should be buying is a bad plan, that wouldn't gain my vote i'd still go for lib dem.

I always thought making the poor poorer was a conservative tactic?

Tax food? That makes no sense whatsoever. I've got a brilliant idea make the poor poorer. How ****ing stupid are Labour anyway? How about taxing the ****s that got us in this mess to start with?

Assuming that's a cry to tax the bankers, they already pay tax. ****loads of it - Bonuses will be taxed at 40%...

I wouldn't mind paying it if we had a say in where it went...

my local council just bought a huge rock that's meant to be a baby's face... no joke looks like a nob

just one example of how a couple £mil could have been spent better

People do understand the difference between "consider" and "implement", right? It's the job of Whitehall to consider every possible method of raising revenue. Many of these methods will be rejected, some will be modified, and some will be brought in as law. But just because someone has written a paper on an idea does not mean it's going to happen - it just means that someone has thought about it. Which is their job. When a concrete proposal comes out, then you can bleat about it.

After looking at my shopping list, it seems they already charge vat on food...

Does no one read other posts? VAT IS charged on some foodstuffs just not all. For example, food considered essential isn't which includes bread. Luxury foodstuffs like crisps, chocolate are charged standard rate VAT at 17.5%. Most alcohol is charged VAT. whiskey actually isn't from memory.

If you want proof go investigate the Jaffa cake and Pringle cases versus HMRC as these directly relate to whether those foods are luxury or essential and whether the manufacturer had to include VAT.
