Try Kayak or opodo.
Ebookers is ok but tends not to be the best price.
From any of them tho, take a look at the cheapest they show and see if you can get a better price direct from the airline in question.

Skyscanner will help you work out which airports you can fly from but doesn't (generally) have the best prices.

i know airasia x used to do cheap flights to malaysia (possibly thailand too) if you dont mind going on a flight for 13hours in budget conditions.

Try STA travel and lastminute.com. Both have been cheap for me in the past.

My friend got return flights to bangkok direct for about £350 the other week so it's definitely possible. £400 is not bad though.
