TDU1 had a great premise, but was let down in some rough areas as the previous post states. But what I will say, is even now in 2010, no game has come close to capturing some of the wonders that TDU1 gave us, the freedom was awesome, just deciding at will to drive in any direction without any particular goal combined with real licenced cars is still to this day unbeaten. Take the round the island race, how intense and satisfying was that, I wished that something like Forza 3 or GT5 would have gone open world, but nope.
Anyway these are the key improvements they need to bring:
1.) The scenery/landscape needs to be more varied. So that when you go on those long trips of driving freedom that you get a sense of going place more.
2.) Please sort out the road layout so we have more curves lol ! the original game was a bit 'digital' in that respect. (roads didnt seem to curve smoothly, and seemed much more geometrical than they should have been)
3.) More up and downness (for want of a better term), e.g. more hills.
4.) Work out a better MP solution than seperate server instancing in the first game, I realise you cannot have everyone in the open world at once (at least not whilst the game is heavily populated in the beginning), but at least code in better support for meeting friends in game.
If you took the quality of reproduction in licenced cars that Forza/GT bring and combine it with an open world, then I believe you would have the ultimate driving video game.
A few people have said to me that Burnout Paradise went one better than TDU1, but I dont feel they are quite the same type of gaming experience. Whilst I loved Burnout Paradise, it did not give the same experience and freedom that TDU provided.
I really feel that Eden captured something magnificent with TDU1 and let it slip with some engine and MP issues, but if they sort all this out with TDU2 then prepare to be amazed.
Please, Please, Please No off-road racing though !
