Spec me speakers please (Logitech Z-2300 vs Z-5500)

I've heard that these two speaker sets are very good, and I like their look, so I think I'll buy one of them. I just have two questions:

Is there any difference between the Z-2300 and Z-5500 apart from the number of speakers?

If the Z-5500 has audibly better sound quality or better bass/subwoofer, I'll go for the more expensive route, but if the Z-2300 sounds exactly the same I'll take it, as I'm not a heavy user of surround sound.

Also, would a cheap sound card do the speakers justice or would I need a more expensive model to get the most out of them? My current onboard soundchip is ALC888.

Edit: Also, to complement my soundcard not having an equalizer, I currently use SRS Audio Labs to make my sound not flat (I tend to turn down midsections and turn up bass/treble). I'm looking for something that will make this obsolete, as it doesn't support 24bit or 192kHz sound. (My sound card does) Its usage also occasionally results in noticeable pops and crackles when starting and stopping playback.

The Z2300's have a 120watts RMS 8" sub with 40watt satallites. The Z5500's have a 10" sub which kicks out 188watts and the 4 satallites 62watts each with the centre satallite 69watts.

Also the Z5500's have plenty of inputs whereas the Z2300's have only one.

I know you are specifically looking at the Logitech speakers, but I thought I'd link you to the Aegos M 2.1 set up.

I was contemplating the Z-2300 as I was after a good 2.1 set up, but after reading about the Aego's I was more drawn to them. I have the Z-5500 speakers also and in comparison the sound is clearer on the Aego's. The sub woofer is more punchy, clearer... less muddy sounding than the Logitech's. The Logitech speakers are good, but the Aego's are a better sounding, clearer set of speakers imo. May be worth having a look in to for yourself!

Hm, thanks for linking me to the Aego setup. Considering what you say, they look like a very interesting choice indeed.

Would you say the Aego M 2.1 sounds better or worse than the Z-5500s? If the Aegos are exceptionally hi-fi even when compared to the more expensive 5.1 system, I'd rather buy the 2.1.

But if the sound is comparable to the Z-5500 speakers, then I'd rather save a bit more and get the Z-5500s.

About the Asus Xonar, which version would that be?

Or something more expensive?
I'm not good on audio terms, it's something I've never really learned about, so I can't tell the difference between them. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, especially due to stuff I see in the "Z-5500 price" thread, is it worth getting some other speakers instead?
I mainly care about good bass + extremely clear and well defined (not "muddy" or flat) sound.

I recently purchased a set of Z-5500's and would highly recommend them for their sound and inputs the bass is excellent and the clarity is good, I mostly play games and occasionally listen to music but they serve the purpose well. My brother owns a set of Aego M's and loves them to bits. In comparison to the Z-5500 they sound better but some say they lack slightly on bass (depends on your listening preferences).

If you're music lover then I would suggest Aego M over the Z-5500s but if you want versatility then the Z-5500s and the way to go.

Warning: The subwoofer on the Z-5500s is HUGE you may want to find a home for it before you make the purchase :).

The sound card is also another important component, I myself have a Creative X-Fi Platinum but I'm tempted to get the Auzen Tech X-Fi Bravura. My brother has the Auzen Tech X-Fi Prelude and has upgraded the OPAMP, which coupled with the Aego M's sound brilliant.

I would get two sets of aego m's and then a single centre speaker from AE direct. Plug that into set one, flick the switch to activate centre speaker, then with the right outputs you have 5.2 surround.

I would say the Aegos have better sound quality overall... the bass isn't as boomy as the Z5500, it is a crisper sound but not too over powering like the Z5500's can be. The Aegos are great for music, movies and games... were as i'd say the Z5500's are great for mainly movies and games... they lack something when playing music that gives the musics its punchiness.

Out of the three sound cards you listed there... I have the Xonar DX 7.1 PCIE card (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SC-002-AS) and it goes perfectly with the Aegos imo.

If you mainly care about good clear, punchy bass and do not need 5.1, I would say the Aegos accompanied with the Xonar DX sound card listed above is a great combo ... I have it and I find it suits my needs 100%, mainly for music, but also great for games and movies.

I would agree with what BBU has said too... the Z5500 is a great system, but for overall clarity with bass etc the Aegos win imo.

That would be a great 5.2 system that twoblacklines mentioned!

Hope that helps.
