80kmh on skis

I hit practically identical speeds last time I went too (50.1mph), could have gone faster but I need to grow bigger *****. :o:D

Its ****** fast! Just need to go another 40mph on top to keep up with professional downhillers!

Was that a 23km run non-stop, as that sounds pretty intense!

50 is pretty easy to hit on a reasonably steep run. I did it a couple of times on around 300 ish meters of slope, in fact I could have gone faster if I didn't decide to slow down slightly... :o

EDIT: Just realised it was the distance on the phone not asking how long the slope was to get that sort of speed. :o

I think I have the cajones to go faster - by how much I'm not sure. I recorded this at the bottom of a steep section of a red run but didn't point my skis down until I was half way to the bottom. However, very few of us can go this fast without thinking of the consequences of a tumble and this is the limiting factor for me.

Nice steep reds are great for a bit of speed training, usually quite wide so if you do **** up you don't end up going over the edge.

That's my problem too, not so much scared (I know i'm in control), just that if an unknown pops its head up (say a bump) I know it's going to hurt, and the difficulty stopping at that sort of speed if you need to. I think it's a case of disattaching your brain from the rest of your body, there's a reason most downhillers are regarded as crazy. :D

It's all about "the fear"!!! :D

That's why I love skiing! Why dordle down the blues when you can throw yourself off slopes you'd have trouble climbing up, or travelling at stupid speeds. Pushing yourself is where it's at. My motto is definately "if you're not falling over you're not trying hard enough".:p

It doesn't bother me falling over, it's the liability of others that bothers me!! 100kg+ of nutter charging down a slope is all well and good until an <insert word of choice> cuts across your path at the last moment! :p Also it's not fair on your friends you're skiing with if something happens.

However, saying that, whilst I don't have the skill of an expert, I have relatively large cojones... and often act first think after  :o

ooh, i want in on this.
Hopefully going up cairngorm next weekend so i'll try and remember to take my gps.
Been up there this weekend and the snow was slow and sticky but we'll see what happens :D

skiers...all speed and no style...must suck in the bedroom as well as on the slopes =P

ill stick to my ironing board thanks =D

be interesting to see how fast you could go on a board...before having a terrible wipeout lol!

I recently went to Les Arcs in France and did the 7km run from Aiguille Rouge to Villaroger in 15 minutes. It was a great run that involved going down 2 black runs, 3 red and some blue.

I bet i could go 90kmh...Not bad though for an old fart!

That's why the first lift is the best of the day. Get up there before anyone else and have beautifully smooth, empty runs to blat down as fast as you dare. :p It's also why I regard blue runs as some of the most dangerous on the mountain, especially in the afternoon when they are chopped up a bit. Way too crowded and full of people that don't know how to ski. :(

I used to like trying to reach top speed, until I discovered that part of the mountain known as off piste

Yeah I enjoy off piste too, but occasionally a bit of speed is good, and who says speed and off piste can't be put together.:p

Broke my record this morning. It's now 85kmh folks if you fancy your chances

Will post a screeny when I get back.

Recorded 2 tracks - morning and afternoon. Both were started on piste and stopped at the end of the session also on piste so include rides back up between runs. Even so was surprised to have racked up 56km today which is probably 30 to 32km of skiing.

Anyway, I'm confident for 90kmh but 100 is going to be quite a challenge
