Someone stole £20 from a girls purse at work. Now, it was the girls fault I guess for leaving her purse in her locker which was unlocked.

Now, I was working the shift when it happened with 3 other people, and throughout the night I visited the locker area a few times to check my text messages etc as we're not allowed our phones on our person.

I chat to the girl who it happened to quite a bit, and she just told me that the Police have got CCTV of someone standing by the lockers for some time, but they cannot make out what was happening as there was an obstruction, which means it is only circumstantial evidence. (just hoping it isn't me!!)

The Police have taken everyones names and addresses who was on shift that night, and I believe they will be taking finger prints from each of us as they took her purse for finger printing.

Now, I have never had my prints on the Police database, and I wish to keep it that way, so can I politely refuse to give my fingerprints & let them find the culprit via process of elimination?

My manager said the person who did it will be getting the sack, and I don't want to be considered more of a suspect for declining to give my finger prints. Surely they couldn't sack me for not giving my finger prints as that would be unfair dismissal?

What do you guys make of it?

Thanks for your time :)

Seriously fingerprinting and CCTV observation for £20?

Christ maybe the police should manage there time better .

Stop being a women and give them your prints. You scream LIAR to me

Just let them have your fingerprints. If you didn't do it, then your prints won't be on the purse, and then you can "politely" ask for your fingerprints to be removed from their database.

Edit: that does seem odd for 20 quid. When thieves did ~£70 if damage to my car to get my ~£100 stereo, they didn't take any fingerprints. Why is a 20 pound note worth more investigating than £170 worth of damage?

Yeah getting the police involved doesn't sound like we're getting the full story (or maybe you aren't either). Don't think you can refuse to give 'evidence' like fingerprints, but ask the police nicely what the consequences of not doing so are - as you haven't committed any crime and don't want to be on their database. I bet though they'll tell you that if it goes to court and there's you and another suspect - due to your lack of fingerprint evidence that this will be held against you though.

This is where you're wrong. If i don't put a lock on my house does it mean it's okay to rob me? No. If i put all my money in a safe but don't close it is it okay to rob me? No. Why would you think it's her fault that her property has been stolen? Are we not to trust humanity any more?

But yeah, if you didn't do it then just cooperate. If you did then cooperate, maybe if you come forward and offer to recompense her they will be more lenient.

The company takes theft very seriously, it was their decision to get the Police involved.

There was only 3 other people on shift, so surely I could decline to give the prints because it was one of them anyway, which they would find out? lol.

edit: they will not be giving her £20 back as she left the locker unlocked, however if it was locked they would have given her it.

Just give your fingerprints...? I really don't understand why people feel like they shouldn't have to do such things.

Wake up, theres thieves everywhere. I would never leave my locker unlocked.

That would just make him look like he took it and then couldn't deal with the guilt tho.

Is the company going to give her £20, if not, seems like a fuss over something she did wrong in leaving her locker open.

I agree it's a lot of fuss over something minor but I don't agree it's the girls fault, she was just silly for leaving her locker open. I think others in here are right thinking there are bigger fish to fry, perhaps there has been money disappearing from tills/safes/whatever and this is the first chance to catch the culprit.

@OP, I can't see any way for you to avoid having you fingerprints taken without having a huge shadow of doubt being cast over you and at the end of the investigation if it's such a big deal request that your fingerprints are removed from the database. If you've done nothing wrong then you've nothing to be worried about.

Don't be daft, when something is stolen it's the fault of the thief, no-one else. The girl was silly, but she was not at fault especially if she left her locker unlocked in a workplace where she should at least be able to trust her co-workers.

Well when Essex police start recruiting I shall be applying, and I didn't want my prints to be linked to a possible theft of money? Surely that wouldn't look good? I wasn't aware I could ask to have my prints removed after the investigation, if this is the case then I have no problem with it what so ever :) Thanks for your help

You want to be a copper but don't want to have your own prints taken

double standards much?

;)

tell them to print everyone else first and they will have the thief before they need to take yours :)

PS Dont believe the police would even bother with this. I think the company is lying to you.
