Late payment on credit card question

Hey guys

I recently changed the date of all my direct debits to fall on the 1st of each month as I previously had them scattered all over the place. So this meant I knew exactly how much money I had for myself for the month as soon as I got paid

Unfortunately, as I did this in January, it skipped February as my January payments had already come out and they all were due next on the 1st of March.

I forgot this meant I'd miss my credit card payment for February, so just looked and noticed I've received a late payment fee

This is the first time anything like this has happened, and I'm extremely annoyed at myself for doing. I know it's not a huge deal but I'm just a bit worried this might have quite a hit on my credit rating, is it worth worrying about for a one off or should it be ok?

Cheers :)

I just did, but unfortunately they said it's unlikely they can do anything because I didn't even attempt payment even though I didn't actually intentionally miss it

If you want to get the charge reversed i'd write into them, acknowledge it was your error and ask politely if they will refund as a good will gesture.

It is very likely your credit report is going to show a late payment also.

if you never done this before they SHOULD give you a refund..I have got them by just being nice and saying this has never happened before look at previous record bla bla etc.

They will normally just refund the charge and ask that you setup a direct debit which you have from what I read and I cant remember where they normally let you off twice in a year period!

I got all mine via speaking to them.

Just as a note, the whole writing to them like the show you at moneysaving expert only works the once.

If it's your first time you should be able to get it removed, just explain nicely and ask if it's possible as it's your first time and a mistake if you can have it removed.

It will be marked on your credit records regardless of what happens. At best, they might return the fine as a goodwill gesture.

If they don't, you could switch to another card company and cancel your current card. They will ask why and will probably transfer you to what is effectively a "talk customers out of leaving" department. You can explain it to them. Maybe they'll offer you something, maybe they'll be more likely to refund fines in the future for other customers, maybe they just won't care. Whatever happens, it's worth bearing in mind that credit card companies are not doing you a favour for the good of society, despite their advertising. They're businesses that exist to make a profit. There are many of them competing for the same customers - if you don't like the service from one of them, pick another.

One missed payment isn't going to destroy your credit history.
My other half is a credit manager and they would simply ignore this glitch, but would be wary until you had proved it was that, a glitch.

As long as you don't do anything that also triggers concerns for a few months it will be fine. So don't apply for any credit, miss any payments etc etc. The next payment will mean that you do not form a string, lots and lots of people get the odd miss, no issue its when you form strings they worry, like missing 2-3 months or applying for lots of credit at the same time.
