Ok I suck at maths

I'm on call 1 night in 11 for £3,000 per year. If called out my first two hours are 'free'. After this it's time and a half or double time depending on what day it is. I'm out ~30% of the time. I think this is a pretty good deal??

I am on call 1 week in 3 and get £500 for each "shift" if you like.

Come months I get £500, some months £1000.

Depends how the weeks fall in the month.

I also get x1.5 during the time called out, although I can usually do what I need to from home.

I only get the hourly rate if I leave the house.

^ Except getting paid a massive amount of money.

I take it you're a vet?

If you don't like it, do something else??

My gf was the vet and she only got paid £38k per annum. One night in 4 on call and 1 weekend in 4. Some nights/weekends were quiet, some nights I never saw her (and yes she was expected to work a full day afterwards as well) Yes, she is now a consultant, never being on call and earning £70k per annum.:D

A vet is a vocation, not a profession to make money especially if you look at how long it takes to get qualified. If you were in it for the money you would be a doctor or a dentist.

£38k? How could they deprive her like that!? That's around 800quid a week and she was only on call one night in 4 and 1 weekend in 4? :o

Problem is the Op hasn't yet made his post clear. Really they are offering him £2,350 per annum to be on call for the Sunday (he's already on call for the Saturday for his £650)

I would suspect that if he was getting £650 per annum for Saturdays then it's not every Saturday and/or hardly any callouts ever.

OP needs to supply more info but on current basis, assuming he was happy with £650 for a Saturday, he is getting offered 3 times that much to do a Sunday plus an index linked payrise.

:p That doesn't even warrant an answer. I will say that on busy weeks she earn't less than the minimum wage.

But you also said that some were also very quiet, surely evening it out in hours. I challenge you to find a £38kp/a minimum wage job :p

?eh?

I think she should try working in a profession where on-call, actually means you are at work 100% of the time you're on-call for. I would be happy if my 13hr a day weekend shifts involved any time at home! All for far less than she gets paid.

I think your maths are failing if you think she could get below minimum wage on that salary. I think she would need to work close to every hour of everyday to earn that on minimum wage.....

Currently we are on 3rd line support for 4 hours on a saturday once every 5 weeks. For this we get £50.

They are trying to get us to do 24x7 once in every 4 weeks, and giving 10% base salary allowance. We would get time in lieu for any hours worked over 2 hrs per night.

Okay. Not distratcing from the OP point but here's the maths:

£38,000 per annum = £730 which for normal day hours equalled £15 per hour.

When on call for one night and the weekend (which required a full Saturday) meant she was on £12.81 per hour.

If she had a busy week on call and worked all night on her night on call and all weekend then she was on about £8 per hour.

Okay I exaggerated :o And yes over time on less busy weekends it increases it. However the point stands, who would work an 80 hours week for £8 per hour as a 7 year trained professional? A doctore and dentist she went to uni with eanrs £140k and £60k in comparison with many less hours worked per week.

And yes, I feel sorry for people where on call means working. I guess you are a nurse or something?

As for the Op, They are paying you £50 for four hours every 5 weeks, and now want 48 hours every 4. Your old hours on call was 41.6 hours per annum for £520 per annum or £12.5 per hour. They are now offering £3000 for 312 hours per annum = £9.62 per hour.

So yes, the rate of pay on offer has dropped. However, the offer of time off in lieu (in additona to your wage I presume) over 2 hours compensates this slightly.

Depending on how much work you do when on call and how often that goes over 2 hours depnds whether the offer stacks up. You could with time off end up with more than £12.50 per hour worked on call.

Also depends what your basis rate is and if it's quiey as to whether the £9.62 per hours is worth it. If you hardly get called then been paid £9.62 to sit at home playing games and sleep 8 hours every weekend in 4 seems a good deal.

No, they are asking for 108 hours, you forgot the 12 hours a night

So hold on, they want you to do all week on call every 4, not just the weekend like you stated?

If so then tell them to shove it where the sun don't shine.

(in saying that our company pays £8 per night to be on call(1 in 4 rota) plus time and half for any time worked which is probably less than what they are offering but I think what we pay stinks anyway)

Never said just the weekend

Not when I have to be on call all night and all weekend :( for a measley 7.8% increase

And yes, one whole week on call, 24 hours a day (well except the working hours)

So actually its 130.5 hours a week (1566 a year)

For £2450 a year... so £1.57 an hour?

When we asked if we had a choice, they basically said no, and they would change our contracts and give 1 week notice per year worked. Is this legal?
