sorry for the short bit of text - posting via mobile

I'm interested to know how these two cards compare performance wise. I sent my 8600 / 8800 GT OC (640mb version (I can't remember if it was 8600 or 8800 sry!) off for RMA as it died and have received a 9800 GTX+ - I'm assuming this is a huge upgrade but just want to ask the experts!

Also, how does it compare to the 5770 XFX XXX edition I bout to tied me over whilst the RMA was taking place... and how much the 9800GTX+ might be worth (looks brand new - OEM)

Cheers,

5770 is the better card by about 20-30%, TBH it's not much more better than an 8800GT, a few more shaders and minor clock boost, I would say it is worth around £80-90 sold as new.

Not a huge upgrade as the 9 series was just a rebranded 8 series but still an upgrade.

The 9800GTX+ has 128 cores running at 738Mhz

The 8800GT was only 112 cores and running at 600Mhz although the OC version would run slightly faster.

The 8800GT were only 512Mb, are you sure it wasn't a 8800GTS 640Mb? In which case it's even more of an upgrade.

Your 5770 is 20 to 25% faster than a 9800GT

So still quite a lot ahead of the 9800GTX+

As for worth, on Ebay as daft as it is, it will fetch £80 to £90. Since gtx260 sp 216 and even 4890 fetch only £100 or less ( I sold my EVGA gtx260 KO for £95 on MM) the maybe £70 to £80 on here.

Or you could keep it as a Physx card?

i think i prefer the nVidea - i've noticed a change in games which use Physx and i guess im used to the nVidea brand... just bought the 5770 as it was the flavour of the month.

it was indeed BFG 8800GTS 640MB now that you mention it, it rings a bell... so the 9800GTX+ is quite a good 'free' upgrade from the 8800? nice :-)

more opinions welcome, especially as to the worth of both the 9800 and the 5770, thanks.

Two games you noticed a change with physx? And since your old card was a 8800GTS 640Mb the 9800GTX+ is at least 30% quicker than a 8800GTS 640 but your 5770 is 63% quicker at 1680 x 1050. At 1920 x 1200 the difference is 45% and 101% quicker.

In fact your 5770 is 28% faster then your new 9800GTX+

Your 5770 has dx11 to boot as well, uses less power and runs cooler.

However I can see you are a Nvidia fanboi so it's irrelevant which is faster so sell your 5770 and use your 28% slower 9800GTX+ for your gaming.

Makes a change around here for someone to take the time to give a sensible and comprehensive answer without pro one camp or the other hysteria :)

EDIT: Well you kinda spoilt it with the last line :P tho that doesn't change the fact its right.

I was answering sensibly with neither hat on (having owned all the cards the Op has in the past) until he made that comment about noticing the difference in physx games and I just gave up then. ;)

Hey, thanks for the support comment though. Much appreciated.

The op has his choices

1. Keep the 9800gtx+ and have 28% lesser framerates but better Mirros's edge and Batman performance with physx on.

2. Sell the 9800GTX+ and have 28% better framerates and dx11 support but worse physx

and 3, my personal favourite (I have a 9800GT as a physx card to my 5850 as I speak) keep them both for best of both worlds.(however, if you can get £90 for the 9800GTX+ then sell it and buy a 8800gt or 9600gt for £40 to £45 as a physx card as the 9800GTX+ is overkill.

EDIT: Since the Op listed his 5770 for sale on MM before I even made my last reply which you responded to Rroff, I think my point about him being a blind Nvidia fanboi is proven.

I don't think the guy cares to much about games performance, if it just does the job then it will do mentality, and that's fine. I would sell the 5770 as well if performance wasn't my thing, you're going to make a fair bit more than selling the GTX.
