NVIDIA GTX 480 makes benchmarking debut, matches ATI HD 5870 performance (video)

Hi,

My dliemna is caused by the nvidia 3d vision, I love it. Best upgrade i ever did. For me better than i7 and ssd's, both of which i still think gave my pc a substantial speed boost. I would even go as far as saying im even more impressed with it than when i bought my first 4mb Orchid righeous 3dfx card.
Anyway, i have not heard anything from ati regarding their 3d soulution.
I currently have a gtx 260 which i have overclocked. This card is obviously for my 3d gaming, as i also have a 5870 for my online fps gaming.
I really really like the ati card. It gives me very high fps with all the eye candy. My 120hz screen allows me to enjoy these high framerates all the more. Smooooooth fps gaming. I cant go back to slower framerates.
Anyway, the 260 is now REALLY showing its age. With new releases eg bad company 2 and just cause 2 demo my framerates are crippled (between 10-30 fps) with 3d vision enabled and all settings on high.
So for me it looks like i will have to buy a fermi card, as i want dx11 (so not looking at sli 200 series cards). Then i can sell my ati card and use one card for both online 2d fps games and 3d gaming.
I would much rather sell the 260, buy another 5870 and crossfire. But i havent got a clue when it will be that i can use the ati for 3d. Now that 3d vision takes up over half my gaming, im not up for waiting months.
The above is the reasons why i am going to attempt to buy a gtx480 at release. I was just wondering if anyone can give me an idea as to my chances of getting one. I will stay up all night with my finger on the refresh button. Is it likely that if overclockers do indeed only get 25 cards, that they will be sold out in less than 5 mins? Maybe this is a silly question, but maybe this kind of shortage has happened before and someone here has experience as to how long a number like 25 release day cards stay in stock.

Thanks in advance,

Phil.

There are 3D vision "solutions" for ATI - but despite what some people say they aren't as good as the current nVidia incarnation for overall performance, polish and compatibility @ 120Hz. The actual quality of the stereo vision is debatably better but your still left lacking in other key areas.

Rroff, thanks for the info.

Is it possible for me to buy a pair of shutter glasses that are wireless and compact like the nvidia ones? I saw some news a while back about some Bit cauldron glasses that looked pretty nice, but i havent heard anything since regarding availability. The other thing im concerned about is, like what you said, the overall performance, polish and compatibilty. I am really happy with the nvidia version. I would not want to buy another pair of glasses, only to see poor performance and a lot of tweaking to get the games looking good.
Ill keep my fingers crossed that come the fermi release date that i dont need to buy one, and can just buy another 5870.

Thanks again,

Phil.

What 3d Vision solutions exist at the moment for ATI cards? I'd like to try them.

We know the tech is there, so it's only a matter of time before a proper NVidia-challenging 3d vision solution is available for ATI - the question is when? before the end of the year?

@Sc00p007: regarding shortages, yes, these have occurred before. What is likely to happen is that many more people than cards exist will be constantly refreshing their browser at the time of release (or placing preorders if the option exists), and it will be down to pure luck who gets them.

It's unconcievable to think the GTX480 won't be better than the 5870.

why is it inconcievable to think the GTX480 won't be better than the 5870 nvidia doesnt always have to be better than ati this could just be ati's turn for a few years, nvidia had been top dog for what 7-8 years nothing lasts forever

Usually the next card that comes out is the new top card, even if only for a few months. From the reviews I've read and what people have said I'd say they have done a good job with the 5870. The last time I can remember an ATI card with a similar performance jump like that was probably the X8** range. So, a few years ago.

and then what 18 to 24 months later nvidia brought out the 8800 cards and we all know what happend then, all im saying is that it swings in roundabouts
*sorry if my time line was off

8800GTX was November 2006 I think? I remember Oblivion being released at the same time and HDR+AA not working on 7800s but the "Chuck patch" making it work on ATI hardware.

I also apologise if MY timeline is off as well. :p
