Hi all,

My girlfriend is after a new car. She has about £2,000 to put down as a deposit and will be looking at taking a finance option to give her a total budget of around £5,000.

She wants something small, up to about 3-4 years old, and reliable. I know nothing about cars, so I/we are looking for some advice.

She really likes the Citroen C1/Toyota Aygo/Peugeot 107. She has seen a 2007 C1 with about 31,000 miles for £4,995 which she likes. Would this be a good deal assuming the car is in good condition? Here it is - http://www.thamestunbridgewells.citroen.co.uk/used-vehicles/used-car-search/Citroen-C1-4309505/

What else would you recommend for this budget?

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't recommend spending anything on an Aygo/C1/107, they're truly nasty, horrible little cars

This tbh. I'd get a 2001ish Ford Focus.

After wasting 2 months of my life looking for a nice 2001-ish Focus, I gave up. The only one I would buy is my fathers, which he won't let me have. Foci aren't owned by people who look after cars well, so after 9 years of abuse they look tired and ratty. I don't blame someone for wanting to spend more money on something newer.

I'd imagine an early base model Fiat 500 wouldn't be much more than £6k~ and miles better than the Aygo,C2 etc...

Personally for £5k I'd look at a Fesita/Punto though.

£2k could also still easily get you a good Fiesta for a few years at least.

This may come across as snobbish but I genuinely don't mean it to be. But it doesn't seem worth getting a £3000 loan and spending £5k on a car that will be newer yet no better than a £3000 Fiesta/Polo/???.

Focus - Way too big for her
C1/Aygo/107 - Why is this so bad? Are they not reliable?

As for getting a car with the £2k, she did buy a Fiat Seicento 2001 for £1,300 and has had nothing but problems with it. It's gone now, and she got the same money back, so no issues. However it cost her a lot in repairs and stuff so she wants to spend a bit extra to get something newer and more reliable.

Basically she doesn't want to be spending out £100 here or there to keep it running.

For about £2k she would be looking at a Fiesta from about 2001. How much more reliable is this going to be over the Seicento she did have?

I'd get a 2001ish Ford Focus.

Are you a 24 year old girl who wants a small car up to 3-4 years old?

Me neither.

The vast majority of normal hatchbacks for £2k are ruined as a result of being owned by people either dont care, dont know how to care, are just tards or who simply view them as cheap cars.

Good idea if you've got the time to sift through the dross and want something with a slightly better chance of being looked after, but for a normal car for a normal person its a waste of time.

You seem to know your stuff about cars. What would you recommend she does?

I suggest she looks at the Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta and Fiat Panda and simply choses the one she likes best. This is her best chance of tidy, hassle free motoring and lets face it, £3k loan over 3 years is hardly bank breaking stuff is it.

Thanks for the recommendations.

No it's not, she is looking at about £100 a month, which she has budgeted for :)
