Ok will be buying one of these in the next week or so, filtered down all my choices and ended up with these 2. What are peoples opinions on one or the other? Got about 3k to spend and that seems to give me a fair choice of either on autotrader. Running costs, reliability etc? Anything specific to look for on either model that can go wrong?

Ta in advance.

if you are just after a run around, you're going to get a lot more focus for your money.

If you want something fun, you can get a half decent EK4 for that, although it'll be older, and more basic in terms of luxuries.

The EK4 is the faster Civic. - 1.6, ~160bhp.

Looks like this:

So it would be Focus for comfortable run around, or Civic if you want a well rounded, reliable hot hatch that handles.

Typical OcUK, a few posts into a bog standard 'I just want some hatchback' thread and already we've got hot hatches in here. Just whats the point? Why does everyone here think everyone needs a fast car?

OP: Get a Focus 1.6.

Well he did say he was after one or the other....

Although I would personally say go with the Focus tbh

That is the only Civic that isn't miles above or under his budget, you'll see I also recommended a Focus

So you are saying that for £3000 the only Honda Civic on the used market is the 1.6 VTi?

Cracking. Absolutely cracking.

I guess this sort of thing is a mirage then?

Much more his thing. Newer shape, newer car, lower running costs. I would suspect he is chosing between something like that or a Focus 1.6 or similar.

If he wanted a hot hatch I think he may have hinted at that in his OP.

Read his post again. Does he strike you as the sort who wants a quick car?

He just wants to buy a normal, everyday hatchback and wants help to decide which is best. Its pointless, yet not unexpected on here, to confuse the issue by banging on about high insurance hot hatches.

FFS, how's the weather up there?

There are a very small handful of EPs that are even close to his price range, and I believe that is the only one. You will not find a decent one for under £4k, and given that £3k will buy him a decent MK1 Focus, one assumes that a decent car is what he is after.

Would you buy from the bottom of the market? I wouldn't.

Regardless, informing him of another option (a trait you are so fond of) has done no harm.

So just tell him he's not likely to get a good Civic for his money and recommend the Focus, dont roll out the performance cars.

Happens every time on this forum and its getting so ridiculous. 'Spec me a family car for my two kids' '3 litre Mondeo!!!' 'Hi my girlfriend wants to spend £5k on a 3 year old hatch, any advice' 'Get an 8 year old Puma!', 'My Dad wants an estate car' 'Get an E55 AMG!!!!!!!'

Dear OP, I apologise for giving you a more varied choice within your original specification. It won't happen again.

ok ladies, hush!

Thanks for the posts though, it is appreciated :) I was veering towards the focus a little initially but had heard the civics were nice too. Not overly bothered in a "hot hatch" but i just figured i would get a better coniditon and specced "regular" version for my money. So long as i can get my golf clubs in it im not bothered :)
