The composer of some of England’s best-known classical music is to be elbowed into oblivion ... by a Scottish economist.
The Bank of England has announced plans to withdraw from circulation banknotes carrying the portrait of Sir Edward Elgar. All £20 notes in future will be emblazoned with Adam Smith instead.
Smith began to replace Elgar on the notes in 2007, with the two formats running concurrently, but the Bank said yesterday that notes with the composer’s face on them would no longer be legal tender from July 1. Elgar was introduced in 1999 and still appears on one in ten of the £30 billion of £20 notes in circulation. But they are increasingly tatty and are easier to forge than Smith notes, which carry more security features.

I think it's a shame he won't be reprinted onto new, more secure notes

As I haven't seen any - I wonder how many Englismen are on Scottish currency?
