Today's poorly researched topic is the MVS Venturi, a French supercar. Don't worry, I'd never heard of them either. In fact, I probably would have never even known about them had I not had a ride in one when I was about 13. I was on a French exchange at school and the kid I was exchanging with had a show-off ******* father who had left the mother for some Gauloise-smoking peasant tart and disappeared and bought this sports car. I seem to remember he wasn't a very good driver either, but the car had plenty of beans and that's what counts when you're 13.

So. They started making them in about 1984, fibreglass body, mid mounted turbo V6 (not sure what from) and Renault gearboxes. The one I got a ride in would have been a very early 90's example, it was red and looked like this:

Later on they decided they wanted to go racing and made a new model on crack and steroids called the 400GT, thus:

Note the spoiler carved out of pure caffeine with added chemical sweetner.

The later car was the Atlantique by the look of it. Never saw one, or the mad 400GT unfortunately.

They went bust in 2000 apparently. I don't think I've ever seen another one so there can't be many about. I do remember it being a shameless copy of the crap Ferrari at the time which would have been the 308. A real piece of junk at the time and you can pick them up for next to nothing these days, so the Venturi would have been able to give it a proper run for its money. Go the French!

Bit of not very helpful info on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venturi_Automobiles

Had this car on Gran Turismo 2. Loved it. :D

Edit: I used to use it for all the endurance races.

Engine - PRV (Peugeot/Renault/Volvo) V6 from the 80s/90s. :)

Meanwhile, French supercar manufacturer Venturi had been developing their own versions of the PRV. The most powerful versions they built were in the Atlantique 300 at 207 kilowatts (281 PS; 278 bhp) from a single turbocharged 3 litre 12v, and they successfully raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the 600LM with a twin turbocharged 24v 3.0 litre, pushing out over 450 kilowatts (610 PS; 600 bhp) in race spec, and the road-going spin-off, the 400GT managed 300 kilowatts (408 PS; 402 bhp). This used the low compression bottom end common to the Renault turbo engines, coupled to 24 valve cylinder heads with bespoke rockers and tappets.

Awesome looking car in 400GT spec. Definitely as said hints of Ferrari all the way through, side profile is like a mini F40!

Awesome looking beast! Had never heard of them before this thread :o

Screams Ferrari, but that's not that a bad thing :D

I immediately thought of Venturi when I saw the Alpine thread.
I remember seeing a blue Venturi 400 GT in London once. Took me a while to figure out what it was, but once I did felt honoured :o
It looked fantastic and fantastically out of place in North London..

The Atlantique was an awesome car and got a lot of positive reviews when it was released. Very strange as I was just thinking about them yesterday when I saw the thread about Renault Alpines!!
