A few weeks ago I bought a new bike - Horra! Now to get rid of my exiting bike. It's not in great nick but cycles forward - occasionally - and stops.. but not necessarily when you want it to. Too good for the dump really but not good enough to sell.

Anyway, bit naughty this I know but a few Fridays ago I cycled to the station as normal but this time I decided to leave outside the bike shed and unchained hoping that someone would take it off my hands. I was out that night and got a taxi home so it was thee all weekend... To my disbelief, it was still there on the Monday evening when I returned from London.

I took it to the station every day and left it unchained for a week before someone took it.

Last night, I got a phone call from the police saying they found my bike .. I forgot it was fitted with a transponder !!

Dump it is then

Why would you report a bike missing that you wouldn't want?

or is the bike microdotted?

It got dumped in town.. Fitted with a transponder. I have to pick it up!

The police put an Immobitag transponder in the bike’s frame. This allows them to identify lost or stolen bikes and return to their rightful owners.

Police fitted it free years ago.

all a transponder does is give off a radio signal so it can be located, it doesn't generally come with your name and address on it?

hence how did it get back to you, if you hadn't reported it stolen?

how would the transponder be activated? or how would the police know to look for a non reported stolen bike?

just wondering

edit: saw your reply, thats pretty much the same as microdotting then with regards to finding out who owns it.

can you not just offer it up on bumtree free or give to a small child you don't like? :p

As above.. it was fitted by the police years ago at the station. It has a unique signal I think that when cross referenced has my details. I just had fill in a form when it was fitted.

Did the Police 'recover' it from some known toerag, and scan it? Seems the most likely explanation.

Unlucky... can't even get a bike nicked properly ;)
