New Street Light issues?

The oh so lovely council have decided my street was too poorly lit and installed new street lights all up the road. I did not think too much into this until last night when the lights were turned on.
To my joy one of the new lights is situated right outside my bedroom window and due to my house been raised up from the main road the light is also at the exact same level, so as you can imagine with these new brighter lights my room is lit up all hours of the night like the middle of a bright summers day!!
My blinds/curtain combination does nothing to block the brightness.
What i would like to know is if there is any room to complain about this at all or do i just have to double up on curtains/black outs and hope i don’t have to resort to installing a mirror to the outside of my window to reflect light elsewhere!?

Seeing as it is only one light, you might be able to complain and get something done... I wouldn't be too hopeful though!

Buy some black-out blinds. A lot of people (including me) have/had this problem and I doubt you're going to get any action out the council.

Had/having the exact same issue as this. But parents phoned the local council afew months back. Came round afew weeks ago with a cherry picker and basicly spray painted one side of it, but did a really weak job.

So now its being moved up the street abit away from the effected people and updated to a better lamp (effected about 3-4 houses in a semi-circle). Cost about £2000 which was ******* anoying tbh. But two of neighbours chiped in £300 each afaik.

But at least its moving now and being made to look a lot better, so meh :p

Edit: if you dont/cant get the thing moved, im sure no-one will make mush fuss of you spray painting the side that effects your room black. As that will be the coucils first option afaik. But make sure you tie up you ladder, do it safely etc

They did this near me too, it's really annoying.

There's a village nearby where the residents voted a few years ago to never have streetlights installed. It's much nicer when night time is actually dark. Plus it must save buckets of energy.

You can try complaining but at this stage you’re lumbered with them. Blackout lining for curtains or blackout blinds should solve the problem.

Cheers guys! as im typing im wide awake due to the damn light so im having to resort to the xbox and final fantasy to try tire myself.
Im thinking its going to be easier to go for the black outs for now but its the hassle of fixing up my olf curtain rail, that and the fact i still do not like been sat in my front garden at night trying to relax yet lit up so much!
Im tempted to go for a towel throw out of the window but thinking that might bite me in the ass later haha!
Oh and Northstar cheers for the link its got some good info on.
I suppose im just really annoyed with the fact there is also no night sky now just an orange glow! i lived up in the dales for a year and the 1 street light we had was bust so the night skys were amazing but again i does suppose been in the city has its crime risks and if someone was able to break into my car id be just annoyed there was no lighting around. Catch 22 really!

Either way cheers for the advice! now anyone any good at fitting cutain rails? haha

Climb the lamppost. That normally sorts it out. Well it did in our old cul de sac anyway - neighbours always wondered how our lights broke lol.

Black out curtains are excellent, although a touch ugly.

The only major issue is that your body needs some daylight to wake up in the best possible mood. I find (when i had them) when i awoke id always fell a touch groggy.

Derby have had/currently installing new street lights all across the city.

They can install a shield the goes round the back of the light unit to block some of the light from going into your room at night. See if this can be done??

Ive had this for years.... you will soon get used to it. If you care that much just get some better blinds or similar. Seems a little unnecessary to make them move it.

No harm in complaining? They'll either take it down and apologise (make sure you provide pictures of how it lights up your room maybe), or they'll tell you to f off :p
