Will they control any device, even the new stuff? cos Im hoping to get my audio setup in my main room in the near future, and it would be nice to have 1 control for everything, my tv, av amp, vcr/dvd combo, media player and freeview

Agreed. My harmony 555 does everything so well, I never have to use the original remotes. Also they have a learning function so if a new piece of kit does not yet have support in the database (unlikely) then providing you have the original remote you can easily teach it. There is a small learning curve to use the GUI and get everything setup but it has matured a lot of the years and is quite user friendly now.

As this is kinda the thing I'm looking for, does anyone know if the Logitech remotes support the original WDTV?
If not, which would you recommend for using with an TV, amp, Sky box, and eventually a Windows media receiver?
Sorry if I hijacked the thread a little :p

How do you make the choice as to which one is most suitable?
I just checked on the Logitech site and their compatibility checker advised me to get one not out in UK for another month.

I need to look into these remotes, I've never seen the attraction before, all the faffing about and problems setting them up.
It really isn't a problem for me to have a few remotes but maybe I'm missing something?

Ihave a allforone and that has a learning feature but it can only hold about 10 buttons before the memory is full. How meny buttons can the logitech hold when using the learning thing??

you really have to want to use all the features of the more expensive versions to be worth the money, imo. I bought a 785 for the old man for christmas at a bit of a billy bargain price (£65 new). its a great remote for that price. less so for the price it goes for now (£100+).

i personally still cant justify the cost of one.
I also have a Harmony One and its great works with everything even my 360.
so does the remote than came with my amplifier. and it controls my pc, my tv-backlighting....even the room lighting if i could be arsed, and that's the problem - im not paying £100 for a remote with a colour screen, because that what it amounts to over my onkyo remote lol

well for a starters there's loads of different models, but just about every button can have a learned function, for every device you program. for the cheaper models its 5 devices, for the more expensive its up to 15 or more. That's lot of learned functions basically.

edit: £69.99 with £25 discount on 25/02/2009. The store often has discounts on it

i bought a harmony one for £65 which i guess is a goos price. the remote itself is good except the surface on the back wears off easily and cheapens it imo. customer service was responsive and i got a DVD multiregion code installed in under 48hrs.

my biggest gripe is the rather poor software to program it. really cumbersome and lame. also the remote responds way too fast sometimes and way too slow other times on the same device and no changes in settings made !?

unless you have really bad remote or missing some, I think these are truly unecessary. I still use my Pioneer remotes since faster to use than the harmony esp. when using Home Media Gallery on my amp

conclusion - they are ok with plus and minus. At £65 i still find it expensive, would have never considered it at RRP of around £120

Too expensive for what they are imo, they would need IR and Bluetooth to justify the expense. The Harmony One for example wouldn't work with my PC, Laptop or PS3.

It's a bit more than that - your amp remote is still like having a bunch of remotes, it just happens to be on one device. Other than being 'one remote' it's actually more inconvenient, as the various device remotes are usually easier to use (at least this was the case with my Denon version).

The Harmony remotes will turn on the TV, amp and device, set the all to the right settings (TV channel/mode, Amp input, device on), and assign buttons to the relevant bits.

Thanks, Ill think Ill deff look into 1 of these when I move my audio setup into the main room.. Im guessing the controls with screens on them, you can rename the devices and buttons?? Because no one can work out how to use my control, cos the devices names are totally wrong. Ie the sat button on the control workes the tv and freeview, with some buttons not doing as they say cos not enough buttons or they are named wrong, if that makes sense. I even get confused wot button does what sometimes.

you can go as far as adding your own logos for the devices lol.
