noticed this today as my system is running a bit sluggish, but it appears msiexec.exe (windows installer) is running in my processes at 50% (ish) at boot then bumbles around 0-10% there after, and its sucking 30-40mb...

I'm not installing anything!.. so does anyone know if it should be running or is there a nasty poking my system (again!)

Its a Vista HP 64bit SP2 system, my virus software is MS Essentials, I've run SpyBot, Adaware and malwarebytes runs in the background!..

is it just another crapness associated with Vista??...

(wish I could afford 7 :( )

It sounds to me like you've got something lurking in the background that is trying to install itself at startup. The MSI Installer should only ever be running with something is being installed AND usually only when you've fired of an install yourself.

If it's running in it's own then it certainly something lurking somewhere. It might not be dodgy though, it could even be something like Adobe Flash updating silently or even Windows Update.

is it just another crapness associated with Vista??...

Vista and 7 aren't that different. 7 is Vista but rebranded without the Bad PR.

Except for the vastly improved GUI, new features, better security, better driver support, better performance and generally more highly polished.

Apart from those minor details, yes its identical.

Seems to be a standard problem by the looks (been googling)... bet ya any money its an MS update thats fannying around in the background!.. wouldn't be the first time one of their 'critical updates' has done summut stupid!...

Anyone else got any ideas?.. or had/have the problem??..

its not so bad when the process goes to 0%... but its still using 40Mb (ish) while its doing it!..

Ran Malwarebytes on a 'Full' scan and (after an hour and half and 500,000 odd files scanned) it found nowt!!

Gonna hit it with a full scan with Spybot/adaware and MS Essentials tonight to see if they find anything!..
