Unless its busy i never even bother pressing the button, ill just wait until its safe to cross just like any other road.

Of course not. In fact if I can I don't even press the button. Have a quick look down the road and you can often walk across in a gap, far quicker than pressing the button.

Also if the walkway is at a junction, just walk across between the red lights.

Carpe diem! Well, I cross when I deem it safe at least.

I do check for coppers though, my mate got fined by a copper in civilian clothing for crossing a red light, if I see anyone approaching me after crossing I'll make a run for it.

Yeah walking is the slowest form of transport, waiting at lights makes it even slower. I cross when I deem it safe. Near the leeds uni there are plenty of crossings which don't have lights so waiting for the green man is not an option (particularly crossing from engineering to the library).

Right, so the majority doesn't care about peds crossing at red lights, why is there such an uproar then cyclists do it then ?

If its a cross junction I'm used to, I cross when I deem it to be safe. Otherwise, if its a large junction with a lot of flow unless I'm completely certain I wait.

As for simple crossing across 2 lanes of traffic, its not exactly hard to judge when its safe.

I wait for the red light and for cars to come to a halt. From that point, there's a 5-10 second delay before the green man shows up and I don't wait.

If you feel under where you press there is usually a little nob thing that turns when it is safe to cross - useful for visually impaired people when there is no beeping. Next time you're at one try and find it.

There is a story doing the rounds amongst the local kids about this. They all say that if you turn this button it changes the lights.

When I'm taking our daughter for a walk we always wait for the green man. I think it's important that she understands the principle.

As a driver, I'm continually surprised how many idiots try and cross a very busy road when there are tons of metal rushing towards them.

Its all about confidence...

I cross when I think I can make it across, sometimes a car will be coming and I'll reason I have the time to cross, other times not. Different people and have different judgements.

I'm not a fan of those people who start to make their way halfway across as traffic is only in one lane.

There's been a few instances when if I hadn't waited for the green man, I would've been hit by some pleb who thought it'd be clever to pelt it through a red light. On the whole, though, the majority of people slow down when the lights are changing and so I don't need to wait for the man to turn green before crossing. Most of the time I don't even use the buttons and will just cross when there's a gap in the traffic.
