got to love designer BS talk :D

It has eagle eyes and dynamic doors doncha know! :p

To be fair though, regarding Lum's observations about the engine, If I hadn't of known better I could have mistaken the petrol engine in the BMW 116i ED for a diesel when I first started it up in the cold and it was just idling. It didn't really sound like a petrol engine on ignition and there was a lot of vibration through the gear lever. Some of the very new petrol engines are quite ...clattery.

The near identical Z16 I had in my Corsa VXR sounded nothing like a diesel engine tbh, and I don't think you can purely attribute that to the turbo. The only thing I would mention about it was the fact that the injectors were quite noisy, giving it quite a tappy sound when stationary with the windows down.

Ok, you couldn't find the OK button at 70MPH in the dark, but 99% of these cars will be owned by someone that will figure out where the ok button is on his first journey out (Or perhaps even have a quick flick through the manual), and will remember its location.

I get the impression that the easiest way to make this a much better car would be to simply change the badge.

I think I'll take that opinion over somebody with so little knowledge of cars he was unable to tell whether the car was powered by diesel or petrol until he got as far as opening the fuel cap.

LOL

I had a 2009 astra as a rental it was a 1.8 petrol and sounded like a diesel, I did double check with enterprise that it was in fact a petrol and the petrol cap confirmed that when I took it home.
It had stupidly poor mpg and was awful. I see nothing has changed

As far as I'm concerned if you cannot tell if its a diesel of petrol, you know nothing about cars, therefore your review is invalid.

My girlfirends car is going in for a service next week we normally end up with another Zafira however I will ask if I can get a new Astra to see what it is like the reviews have been fairly positive.

Also assuming it is like every other model the main OK button for the trip computer is pushing down the left hand scroll wheel on the MFSW.

It has separate buttons for rear and front foglights, something the Germans (or at least VAG) have consistently failed to do despite the fact that rears are meant to be used at <100M visibility and fronts are supposed to be used when visibility isn't much beyond the end of your bonnet. +1 for vauxhall, then I realise it has Vectra-style indicator stalks so -100 there.

I fail to understand this point, yes VAG cars don't have individual switches for the front and rear foglights BUT you can have the rear foglight on by itself and the front and rear foglights on, so given the situation you describe i fail to see how this is an issue, thats unless you want to drive around with just your front foglights on, if this is the case the question of WHY, has to be asked.

I thought it was the other way around - with VW's I've driven you pull the light switch out one click to put the front fog lights on and twice to put the front and rear fog lights on?

On the facelift E39 it's the same, you can either have front fog lights or front + rear fog lights on. The newer BMW's have separate switches though.

This is how it works on my Golf.

People who drive around with their front fogs on really **** me off these days. So I've resorted to full beaming them until either they turn them off or I've passed them - the former has yet to happen.

I wonder if the O/P is talking about the Mk5 or the Mk6. The Mk6 is a considerable improvement over the Mk5 but in all honesty it wasnt too bad. Perhaps not on par with Focus/Golf but not far behind..

Quite an entertaining read - I think most of it went over peoples heads though (don't take it so seriously next time).
