Interesting what would the forum chose to drive if they could take a 1992 Nissan Cefiro or a 2010 Astra Elite?

The Cef. But I'm strange like that.

/Googles Nissan Cefiro

Nissan Cefiro please, over any Vauxhall POS anyday.

I'd have the Cefiro because I agree with a lot of Lum said, I cannot get comfortable*** in Vectras and Astras when I got them as hire cars, and I don't the ergonomics or the way they drive either.

*** - Not to the point of being in agony, mind you ;)

^^^^ yes! someone finally got it.

I wonder if the O/P is talking about the Mk5 or the Mk6. The Mk6 is a considerable improvement over the Mk5 but in all honesty it wasnt too bad. Perhaps not on par with Focus/Golf but not far behind..

Not sure TBH. It's a 10 plate but it looks like the one in that advert where the guy is trying to get his satnav to take him to Glasgow, but it keeps sending him the wrong way onto this twisty B road an then suggests he'd enjoy driving down it despite the fact he's in an Astra.

I don't know if the outward appearance has changed between the Mk5 and Mk6 though.

So a peugeot 207 then? :p

Well it's not going to be the top one, as that's a Saturn ;)

why are you so eager to defend vauxhalls?

why do people find the need to slate them just because they've got a vauxhall badge on ?

The new astra isnt that bad, and i'm bound to say something when people come up with airy fairy ways of saying they basically dont like vauxhalls due to previous experience with a zafira.

If hire/ company cars are giving your back so much grief, why don't you buy something comfortable and use that?

Missed this last night.

In my last job I did exactly that. I had a Subaru Legacy B4 RSK, a couple of Volvo 940s and most recently the Nissan Cefiro SE-4

My new employer simply will not allow me to use my own car for work I have to either take a company car or use hire cars and as I mentioned in the OP due to the slowness of the bureaucracy here, I can't even order a company car yet.

Lum is this the new Astra as in the mk6 or whatever it is now? As it sounds like exactly the same issues I have with the previous gen one. I thought the new Astra was supposed to be alright.

Would ordering an S-Class hire car speed up the arrival of a company car? :p

Have you had some serious back trouble or something? Surely an astra can't be that bad?

I don't get to order the hire car myself, we have admin staff to do that. Otherwise I'd hire a Nissan Cefiro from Lum's Hire Cars and bill them at the same rate that National do.

Yes I've got some pretty serious back trouble. When some pillock doing 50mph plows into the back of your stationary car it tends to do a fair bit of damage. I've been told it's basically permanant.

As for Mk6 or Mk5, here is a crappy picture of it at Trowell services on the M1, someone who knows more about Vauxhalls than me can identify it. I was just going off the numberplate.

mk5 then I believe the mk6 is greatly improved but yes what you have found is exactly what I found when I drive the works one, its bloody awful.

I drove a mates mk5 when he first got it brand new, never known a car that felt so detached, the steering, the clutch, everything was just so light and flimsy like it wasnt connected to anything.

Thankfully I never got to drive it again.

I drove a brand new MK5 Astra fleet car at work a little over 2 years ago, was one of the then new 150bhp diesels, an estate. I thought it was alright for what it was actually, a lot better than the MK4 anyway, had plenty of mid range grunt for a 2 litre oil burner, although it was rather too noisy. I didn't drive it far anyway, about 25 miles up the M5 mostly, I don't remember any real specifics other than that the engine was stronger than I was expecting but noisier.
