Screen sharing? JollysFastVNC? LogMeIn?

Hi,

I've recently got a macmini to use as a media centre. I've just setup screen sharing and opened up port 5900 on my router, but when i connect via my macbook using the built in vnc viewer (command + k in finder) it seems very slow to use over the internet. My internet connection is fast inbound and outbound at both ends, and I've just replaced a windows7 machine with this macmini so I'm comparing the speed of screen sharing to RDP on windows7 which was fast (on the same internet connections).

Any suggestions? I connect from both osx and windows machines to this macmini.

I googled for it, and can see a lot of people saying its slow. I saw an alternative vnc named JollysFastVNC being talked about as fast... anyone here use it? Or should i just use logmein free?

I'd be more worried about opening your machine to the internet using VNC. I'd imagine VNC is pretty easy to hack. Use ssh tunnelling and then vnc.

Aye I was going to setup VPN next and use vnc over that, but as its slow anyway its not worth the effort yet.

Am i right in thinking that Apples Remote Desktop will be the same speed as screen sharing, but with some extra bells-n-whistles?

Not sure, but I reckon vnc will be the slowest. LogMeIn will probably be the fastest as it is based on citrix, you want something like Windows Remote Desktop.

yup i do, but for osx... i know there's a windows remote desktop client but that only good for connecting 'from' osx to windows based machines

Apple's own "Screen sharing" works amazing on a local network, not sure I'd trust any VNC client over the internet though.

As you're running a media centre.. check out my Mac Mini Media Centre thread.

I use HippoRemote to control Plex via an iPhone

I've already checked out your media centre thread and will be using it when i setup plex. Any reason why u chose hipporemote over the various other remote apps for the iphone? and which one do u use as there's 3 hipporemote versions on the store? I also heard good things about airmouse iphone app but not checked out how it differs to others etc.

So how do you lot use your macs remotely? or dont you? logmein? so far you all seem to shy away from vnc over the internet, but i'm just trying to replicate rdp for windows which is a pretty common thing to run over the internet.

I have used jollyfastvnc and chicken of the vnc. Jolly fast would be the VNC client I recommend for OSX. This was to use between OSX and an atom powered linux box and was a little bit laggy over wireless. I would expect worse results over the internet.

I have not tried the OSX sharing, but might be your best bet if others have had good results.
