Why do people feel the need to offer bad advice on upgrades?

Some of us do not only game, and though I'm probably going to move onto a Quad first as it is cheaper and it should still be an improvement for what I use my PC for.

But everyone said that quads are not worth it.....

So why buy more power than you need?

Does your dual struggle with anything now?

I myself don't game much I'm into multimedia video editing and audio production.

So if you are all budget conscious AMD users with more than enough power with x2 and X3 surely 200 quid on a 6 core is a waste of money were the money saved could be put towards a GFX card or SSD? :D

Or because its a 6 core AMD is it ok now to have more power than you need? A veron to nip the shops? :D

I didn't go AMD because it's just satisfactory or something. I bought it because for what I use my rig for there's virtually no difference between a phenom 2 and i7 setup, and because after selling my old stuff I pretty much broke even for the upgrade.

In fact the only reasons I upgraded were because I saw that FINALLY, games are coming out that properly implement AND see benefit from multicore setups, and because I wanted something new to play with.

I guess you will giving the 6 core AMD's a miss then :p

1 thing people are forgetting is features, it's not only about performance..

intel is faster which is true, but amd as some good features, example amd overdrive..

one feature that is really nice is the ability to make custom coolnquiet profiles. I have my cpu @ 1.5GHz .8V for most of the time and then bump it up to 3.9GHz 1.488V when I game or need the CPU power.

And no I won't be getting a 6core unless I can get something for under 100 quid and unlock it to a 6 core

easyrider, I think the point is that what is the point of buying more cores unless you need 'em for the games you are trying to play?
When I NEED more cores to play the next big thing then I'll get some.
I use my PC for pleasure and have no need for the extra cores, when it becomes mandatory for new games I will upgrade. But until then (when 775 quads are obsolete anyway) I'll stick with my obsolete dual core 4Ghz.
Seems like a lot of upgrades are driven by budget rather than need.
Each to their own. :D

hmm, So what a lot of people are essentially saying in this thread is...

If someone asks for something for £200. What you're going to do is spend less than their £200 and give them something you feel they need.

You'll find out what they want to use the system for, and even though this person has specified a budget, you're going to ignore it, and spec them something under budget, but something that will forefill their needs.

Now that doesnt sit right with me, If i come onto a forum asking how to spend £200, i dont want telling I can get the same stuff done for £85 with an alternative. because what then happens down the line when something comes out that the £85 processor cant handle? If i'd bought the quad core at 200 quid, I'd be fine. but no, I was told to go in another direction, and now I cant play such and such, Or i cant produce such and such, Or my 3D rendering isnt taking advantage of such and such.

I'm sorry but it's bad advice to give someone a cheap alternative with less perfomance and function. Its good advise to give someone a cheap alternative with the same performance and function.
