1Ghz 5870 18% faster than GTX480 in Heaven with Tessellation off!

If you can find one cheap and play at 1920x or above its deffinatly quite a performance boost :D a bit late in the day now tho for starting into 200 series SLI. Crysis aside (where performance is closer to an OC'd 5850) my overclocked GTX260 SLI will match or beat an overclocked 5870 in DX9 and 10 games.

 That'l do me , now i've only got this psu to get rid of :o

I'm kinda disappointed there's no GT440 info, or any mid range and low end cards. I can't afford a very high end card, as can't a lot of other people, and there seems too much pampering to the few who can actually afford these ridiculously expensive cards and not enough lower end options for those who are not actually made of money.

Looks like the 5870 ran out of memory hence the low min fps. I'm guessing the Eyefinity 6 card with 2GB of memory should be able to beat the 470 fairly easily, if not the 480.

Looks like NV have done some work on their 8x AA, I don't use it personally but in the past their cards have taken a huge with it.

Does anyone know if Ati are going to Make some sort of announcement about either refreshed card line up or maybe talk of 5850x2/5870x2 to upset nV's launch of their new cards?

Seem to remember a few articles claiming that 5850x2/5870x2 were aleady done And there were even pictures of them!!

I believe ATI's next move is to ready the Radeon HD5890 as a response to the Geforce cards, we known the HD5980 is in the works as it's been listed in the catalyst driver notes since version 9.12.

Interesting. I'm still expecting them to release x2 card versions sooner rather than later. Going to get a lot more interesting once there's actually some competition in the markets! Woo hoo :)

The high min frames Looks promising, does that point to the fact that an early, not optimised driver with a big performance increase possible in the future?

The 5970 is the 5850x2 and 5870x2 combined. It has the SPs of the 70 but the clocks of the 50. That's how it usually goes for the dual GPU cards. ASUS are releasing a Mars bar thing which is 2 full 5870 GPUs on one card. Other than that there aren't going to be any more dual GPU cards.

There won't be a dual GPU Fermi either, not possible.

Tell me if I'm being silly here, but if the min. frame rates are hugely different (nV is ~70% quicker), yet the max. frames are pretty much neck and neck, how can the average frame rate for both cards be so close?!

Unless the Radeon has only dropped to 23fps for like one second!

This isn't exactly a rigorous scientific test... it's probably an anomaly which should have been caught by running the bench multiple times. Or maybe the guy was just running torrents / downloading pr0n while doing the ATI card. :p

5870=1GB mem - 470=1200 mem - 480=1500 mem.

At the rez they are using and 8xAA, the 5870 has 100% used up and gone over its 1GB in a certain part in the game.

It has to be, probably when it first started or something.

Ok this is a big forum but why all the speculation?? This says the 480 is slow or not as good as a 5870 correct? Other previews show the 480 to be faster... From what I can tell and many should believe is that the 480 foes not yet exist for reviews and as such shouldn't be judged. I have a pair of 5870 cards and they are slower than my other pairs of gtx295s... I can't see nvidia releasing the 480 if it's only as fast as the 295 and if it's slower I doubt it'll even release at all! The latest indicates around a 30% speed boost by the 480 over the 5870 in like for like testing on the bench heavon so with that on mind I'm taking all of this in with heaps of salt and a dash of sprinkling of sugar for good measure.

Btw, I'm andy! Long time lurker, joined in the summer but post little incase I get tarred with "noob" for saying what I have. Hopefully I'll settle in now and get posting some more! Seen a fair few familiar faces too which is cool! Anyway, back on topic, does anyone have a semi reliable estimate on release prices (aimed at ocuk staff mainly lol)

Thanks

Andy

They HAVE to release a card to compete with AMD/ATI or they will lose too much customers, i firmly believe they were aiming for much higher clocks but had to settle on much lower clocks (and yield) just to get the cards out the door, kinda similar what AMD/ATI had some time ago with the XT2900 (I think)

Nothing is certain at the moment but all signs point to a slower than expected card, running hot and using a lot of power, I hope I will be wrong but I doubt it.
