Psychology of phobias and fetishes?

I can only speak from my experience but from a little lad I have always liked to see a woman in stockings, suspenders, stilettos, painted fingernails etc and it still continues to this day.
I can't do with seeing a woman with no clothes on and I get more turned on by seeing them in nice sexy clothes so for instance the GMTV team do it for me most mornings.

Concerning phobias, don't get them mixed up with fears.
A lot of people have fears of stuff but not many take them to the next level where thinking about that fear makes you physically sick and totally ruins your life.
We had a bad time with our eldest daughters diagnosed phobia which was frogs :)
One day she saw a frog in the garden and it just manifested until at the age of 16 frogs were ruining her life.
Even seeing the King in Shrek 2 turn into a frog made her cry and be physically sick all day.
Her 16th birthday was totally ruined when her Grandad who wasn't aware of such problems, mentioned seeing some frogs at a Garden Centre.
It's an irrational fear but a phobia takes it to the upper level and it took 18 months of psychiatric treatment to get her back.
She also had a fear of flying and we had bad days going and coming back from holidays but she always went through with it.
She used the techniques in her frog therapy and now flying doesn't bother her at all.

Normally down to child hood i think. An event will of happened which for some reason or another has an ever lasting effect.

This. I woke up one day with a huge spider about an inch from my face.

Bringing a spider near me results in a "Get it away from me or you and it both die" response.

I hate worms, and stuff like that, totally freak me out. Snakes don't bother me it's just those disgusting slimy wriggly gits and they will all die.

Phobias are most likely evolutionary hangups: this snake will rape me and lay eggs in my rectum.

Fetishes are usually knock ons from conditioning. Noticed or otherwise.

Aren't phobias something we inherit from peers, something that's programmed into our mindset at an early age when our minds are empty- such as "Don't go near the dog because he'll bite".

Same goes for people who save money over those that are more loose with their cash. I was reading that people who are more carfull with their money are those those that's parents or grandparents used to say things like "Here's your pocket money, don't spend it all at once", so your mind is programmed not spend. What the peer should have said, is "don't spend it all on sweets".

There is an article on Digg at the moment, I think in the offbeat section which is 20 unusaul fetishes that will turn you off and in that there are some links to other pages which explain the psychology behind them, might be worth a read if you are interested.

Thanks for that.

Interesting thread, I'm terrified of worms, yet I like snakes and have two pet snakes. I have no idea how it all started but I hate the things.

I actually feel sorry for spiders. So many people must kill them because of arachnophobia. =P

We need people to do it now. The spider population has reached an equilibrium (amount surviving to procreate, enough to eat the food available to them, etc).

If people stopped we'd be completely overrun!

That is unlikely. The amount of spiders killed by arachnophobes is negligible as a proportion of the total spider population.

I like spiders. They keep the insect population down. I have three in my flat that I know about. :D

yeah, and about 300,000 that you don't know about. not that there's anything wrong with that mind... i like spiders too.

Man, fetishes are more annoying than phobias.

they're certainly less socially acceptable:

Person A: "i find that x-y-z turns me on like nothing else"
Person B: "you sick *******! i'm calling the police!"

instead of;
Person A: "z-y-x scares the hell out of me - i think it's a phobia"
Person B: "Aaaaaw, you poor thing!"
