To diesel or not to diesel?

$89k ...ouch and then some more ouches.

If I were to leave Britain, which if things continue the way they are, I probably will some day, it'd most likely be for Canada, I already have some family there anyway.

But yes, don't do it, stay where you are, I'm sure you'll be better for it in the longer run.

Canada does look great, all the benefits of America but without the majority of the crime and healthcare issues. We would be heading there next if we didn't have the little one...

Is England really that expensive now? Surely if you still have a job and do the same thing nothing will have changed....?

Anyway back on topic, quickly going off a diesel now. I'd rather spend an extra 10 quid a week in petrol not to drive one. Would love a BMW as I've never had one and it's an itch that some day will need scratching, but the smaller engined ones don't do them justice and the 323/325 may be a little juicy. Is the 320i worth a look for a fairly spirited driver?

I have pretty much had diesels since I have been driving but I have usually done the miles to warrant them.

Just got rid of the TDDi Mondeo I had and now have a Bora. 1.9TDi sport which I am very happy with.

Well I suppose it depends on your perspective, it isn't for many things but for some things it is. Fuel is expensive, certain food seems to be quite expensive now too, property as always (although it's cheaper now than it has been in years), and some electronic equipment can be, tax rates are too damn high too, especially if you make quite a lot.

Oh, don't get me wrong in the Bora getting on a bit now.

It just happened to pop up when I needed a car. 51 plate, full VW service history and 85k on the clock.

They seemed to get good write ups on Which Car etc.

I'll take a look at them, thanks

Any more suggestions? I would kind of like something a little more driver orientated, kind of like a Clio 182....just bigger if there is such a thing in this price bracket

Eh? Driver orientated and bigger than a 182?!! changed your mind a bit there eh...

Do you want a drivers car you can enjoy or a diesel to commute in?

I'd advise the latter going from the OP.

...but there is something sensible in the back of my mind that says "get something newer and more reliable" like: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1473504.htm

You're a fool to think that, my dad thought the same as you, thinking that newer would be more reliable. At the time I said, don't get a renault, get something reliable.
About 15 months ago he paid £4000 approx for a renault laguna, so far he's spent nearly £5000 on just repairs, he's only put about 18k on the clock in that time, stopped using it and drives my mums car instead now.

I'd second a bora, I've got a TDi 130 as well, over 250k miles on the clock, it's still running sweet as a nut.

What sort of a person spends £5000 fixing a Renault Laguna?

Don't even get me started. I keep saying, sell it and buy something reliable. He says "Yeah but if I sell it now it won't be worth nothing" as if chucking more money at it is a solution.
Not much you can do to be honest except watch him throw his money away.

The last cars I had in the UK was a MK2 golf GTI to commute in and a toyota MR2 turbo for a weekend car, I guess I don't wanna grow up and get a boring diesel :p

That sounds pretty scary, the only reason I was attract to the megane was my dad has had one for the past four years and it hasn't missed a beat in the 85k he has put on it. Also I'm under the impression they are half nissan so the electrics should be good?

Well I too have had a nightmare with a Laguna II. I bought my Initiale (top spec) 1.9D for £2200 about 6 months ago and have already spent £3K on it. Time to get rid. Its a shame as its a lovely car to drive when everything works.
