Birmingham-London High Speed Rail Link

At 44minutes (@250MPH) to travel to London from home you could find an ideal job in the city and commute by bullet train - although the proposal is not planned to kick off if everything goes AOK until 2017.... why so late :/

The Jap-side (!) have had super fast trains for years!

Is it really necessary?

National infrastructure is more than necessary, it's vital to the strategic interests of this country, exactly what public money should be spent on. This should have been done 20 years ago though tbh, and I question exactly how we can afford it now.

Well apparently it yields £2 for every £1 spent... which sounds like the kind of line someone running a pyramid scheme would come out with but meh, guess they're seeing it as an investment.

Doesn't change the fact that if you don't have £1, and no-one will lend it to you then you can't have the £2 yield.

They can always do what they did in Cambridge. Spend £4m on making plans for a new station and then scrap the idea because it's "too expensive".
The plans to move the bus station out to the train station haven't been scrapped, just put on hold due to financial restrictions. Part of the whole guided bus debacle was meant to provide a large interchange on the interim of the city, thereby reducing congestion in the tiny centre.

As it stands, we still have buses too wide for the streets careening round corners far too quickly, a crap train station, and a huge waste of money in the guided bus that still isn't open.

Would love it if they started to introduce maglev trains here, watched a program on them a while ago. China already have a 19mile stretch and are aiming to build a 1200mile stretch, not sure if this has started yet. Pitty it costs and arm and a leg as these things do look good.

Not toally sure but they are a lot safer anyway as they are on a raised rail and from the way they are built they can't come off the rails so no chance of derailment. They have a huge test rail system in Germany and unfortunetly they had an accident there while testing, people did die but the train didn't derail at all. I haven't done much research on what happens in an accident though so don't know all the ins and outs.
