I have a Win XP home network where PC1 and PC2 are both linked to the internet via a wireless router. But I want PC1 and PC2 to see each other.

Can I connect them together by getting a networking cable and having them directly plugged into each other?

Thanks,

Jon

They can already see each other since they are both connected to the wireless router. However, I want a faster connection from PC to PC. I can get 1gig rather than 56Mbps on the wireless.

I am not sure what to do regarding the ip addresses and gateways though. Let them find their own or hard code them?

Each PC still needs to connect to the router, which is in a different room to the PC's, so I can get internet access.

Copy down the ip address details exactly as they are now, then change it to static and copy them in to the settings then all you do is just plug cat5 > cat5.

Jobs a goodun.

Copy the ip address details from where? My usb wireless dongle? What do I use as the gateway settings? What about DNS?

After re-reading your last post I'll change what I said and give you something useful, lol.

Just give each pc a new ip address on the ethernet and leave the dns + gateway blank, something in a completely different subnet like 10.0.0.x or whatever, then when browsing to each pc do it via \\10.0.0.x and not the hostname, that way you are sure to be going over the lan link and not wan.

Leave the wireless alone.

Ok, in that case then you could change the hosts file on each pc to have the lan ip for each hostname, It's dirty but I guess that would work :)

if you want faster speeds switch to cable (cat 5, cat6) what router do you have ?

you could buy a wireless n router which has 300mbit.

if you want gigabit network you will have to pay for it.

i guess you could buy two gigabit network cards and then a little gigabit hub or use cross over cable.

i would prefer not to have two network cards when you can just buy a new router that has faster speeds.

If I got a Wireless n router, sure it would be faster than my g router. But how much faster? My current connection is 54Mbps with a signal strength of 4 bars. What do you reckon it would be on a wireless g router?
