Advice, Virgin to Sky

At the moment I'm with Virgin and have the basic TV, phone and internet packages that cost me £29 a month.

Received an offer through the post today from Sky giving me free Sky+HD and installation, with basic 2mb internet, phone line, etc that comes to £28 a month.

TV wise I prefer Sky (parents have Sky and its a lot nicer than Virgin Media imo) plus I really want HD, seems a waste to have a HD TV and not use HD. Yes I could get HD on Virgin but theres the cost of the Virgin HD box at £79 which is putting me off for the moment.

Only issue I have is i've been estimated to only get 5mb internet speed through a phone line. I do a lot of gaming and although i'd probably be able to cope with this speed the limited allowance of 10 gigabyte a month from Sky would probably be used up quickly. Then again I don't fancy paying for the unmetered 20mb Sky service when I can only get 5mb actual!

What should I do? Is it worth going with a different internet provider? What do other people in my situation do?

Could I say to Sky, I want the whole lot (inc 2mb internet) and get them to swap everything over for me. Then head to someone like BE Broadband for my internet?

I was in this situation 4 years ago. I'm on cable with virgin (Ntl back then) and there broadband service was so reliable I did not want to change providers. So I ended up just canceling the Virgin tv package and keeping the phone/broadband.

Doing it this way does cost me more per month, but for me personally it's worth the extra cash.

Oh a Sky HD rocks:)

I have Sky TV and Virgin Internet/TV/Phone, I hardly use the TV or phone at all, it was only £1 to add them so thought might as well! Phone has not been used in like forever and the TV box sits in my housemates bedroom, but is still hardly used.

I do agree, Sky HD does indeed rock, far superior to Virgins offerings :)

Does Sky need a BT line or does any phone line work with the Sky box? (stupid question but need to know these things) :p

Secondly, how much do you pay a month for Virgin, Sky and combined if you don't mind me asking? I love Virgin internet and it sounds like your way of doing things is the way forward :)

However I really don't want to be paying a large amount a mounth for two seperate deals :(

Hi my phone line is Virgin and I have no issues with Sky box being plugged in, even though I disconected it as soon as the engineers had left the house:o

As for cost no worries with you asking mate,

Virgin Broadband + Phone £25 per month + line rental and calls.
Sky HD £55 per month ,I have movies, sports etc hence the cost.

Hope that helps.

You don't need a phone line at all so long as you don't have multiroom, but a Virgin one is fine :)

Hmm interesting... Very tempted then, extra £28 a month for just the Sky package ontop of my Virgin internet/phone line could be doable, plus with Sky's Sky+HD offer with free installation, would be wrong not too!

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated.
