most economical car?

if you want economy get one of those lupos with almuminum engine that was a special edition with a 1.2l engine does like 68 mpg IN TOWN, it also has a dsg gearbox.
just looked it up its called a lupo 3l tdi (3 litres per 100 km) does 0-60 in 14 seconds and that aint half bad for a car that does liek 80+mpg on a motorway

heres a link with more info if youre interested

but in my opinion unless you get something like that theres no point changing car purely for economy

To be fair I think the Audi A2 pretty much trumps it in all attributes? Lighter, more aerodynamic, more space inside. Eitherway your looking at a euro import though.

That 1.2TDi is pretty heavy at 220lbs even if it is all ally, mines 124lb.

That said someone has stuffed the 1.2Tdi VAG lump into a Insight with the IMA for the Xprize competition - uber MPG.

Is this a commuter? Have you thought about a cheap bike? No traffic jams, great MPG, cheap to run :)

The Audi A2 with the same engine as the 3L Lupo was also called the 3 litre Audi. Although it seems it may have been 20kg heavier its cd was only 0.25 compared to the Lupos 0.29.

Either seem to need to have the OEM Bridgestones though else you see a big drop in MPG.

Bikes unfortunately are a nono. i'd get shot by my family because of my past history. :D :p

It's just a straight 10mile run each way down A5 so 60mph roads and not much traffic if any.

I was just wondering that's all given my friend can apparently see 70mpg out of her 2006 TCDi Fiesta and i was just wondering out loud what compares. :)

Lets just do some sums.

35mpg in the focus, current national average for unleaded is 114.5p per litre, or £5.19 per gallon. 519/35 = 14.8p per mile

50mpg in the Fiesta at 115.5p per litre which is £5.24 per gallon. 524/50 = 10.5p per mile.

You're going to save 4.3p per mile. If you do 10k miles a year, you're going to save £35 per month in fuel. Hardly worth the hassle of swapping

If you are happy throwing £400 away feel free to send it my way. I know plenty of people who would like a spare £35 a month extra.

All very well saving £400 a year in fuel. Unless you can swap from a petrol to a diesel car for zero cost, i.e. getting something older, then you will need to take into account the cost to change the car.

Spending say £1K to save £400 a year in fuel isn't actually saving money.

Well going from an old 1.4 Focus to a 1.4 TDCI Fiesta, for example, would cost £3000 to make the trade 'up'. It would take 7.5 years to reclaim that based on those maths.
