Hi all,

Despite quite liking Sim City type games I've never played any Civilization despite hearing good things about it.

I just looked at the Civilization site and had no idea how many versions and add-ons there are!

Is it a case of a new user starting with Civ 1 and working though them?

Imo, just start with civ4, do the tutorial, finish 1 game, then add beyond the sword with a couple of new features, and play that.

Warlords has nothing BTS doesn't except the scenario's special to Warlords.
Civ4: Colonization is a remake of the original colonization, not really the same as civ.

i agree with snowdog, civ4 was a good game. the series is good and bad in the sense that each game is essentially the same with some new units and graphics.

I've only played civ3 which is great and will work on lappy. Beware though this thing will eat hours and leave you not entirely convinced it was worth it :D

CIV 1 would be like going back to the Ark. :D It is a landmark game though, and I'm glad I played it at the time.

Civ 2 would be worth it purely for those lovely multimedia "wonder" movies. It also has the bonus of having Elvis as one of your advisors.

Civ 3 was pretty tight, but the hardware of the time couldn't keep up with the larger games.

Civ 4, with expansions, was almost perfect and the graphical upgrade just piled on the immersion. It was a shame the random map generator was so poor, which ruined its long term appeal. :(

I'm hoping the hex setup will improve the maps generated in Civ 5. With a bit of luck we should now all have the power to play stupidly large maps, with far too many Civs slugging it out. :D

So, cutting through all the waffle... Try and get 4 on the cheap from somewhere.

Civ 3 would be pretty daunting to a new player compared to, say, civ 4. Plus civ 4 has the lovely 3D engine backing it up :D

I keep Civ 2: Test of Time installed on the laptop at all times. Good to load up for a quick game in a window every now and then ;)

I have played a few of the existing civ games. At the time they came out i loved them all. For a new player I would just get Civ4 with the addons (i managed to get civ4 and the 2 main addons for 13 quid, best 13 quid i ever spent.) The graphics don't look too outdated and this game could seriously suck you in. It alone could well last you until Civ5 comes out later in the year.

I am seriously looking forward to civ5, a bit unsure about some of the new gameplay mechanics(love hexagons, not sure about single units per tile) I just hope if all gels nicely like it has in the past!

I would get Civ 4 and Beyond the Sword in a pack, BTS add's new units to Civ 4 but crucially significnatly enhances the AI and add's extra diplomacy options like creating colonies
The AI in Civ 4 is very samey and boring, i had whole games go by without 1 single war, unless i started it :) BTS add's more drama into the AI, and is a much better package

I've played all the Civ games and played all the expansions etc etc, CIV4 with BTS is the best Civ game there's been in my opinion and is a worthy purchase especailly as you can buy the double pack for under 20 quid these days

civ 4 if you like pretty & accessible.

alpha centauri if you like sci-fi, and don't mind the colour brown. (A.C. is IMHO better than civ4, but it's no looker).

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!

When was this announced and how did I miss the news?

Sorry, seeing Civ 5 news for the first time made my brain high. Hexagonal tiles for real? I also just checked twice to make sure it isnt April 1st yet.

Civ 4 pretty much perfected the series, it looks like that for Civ 5 they are trying something totally different. Civ 3 wasnt very good compared to 2 + 4. I still think Civ 2 is great as well as 4.

I don't know what people have said so far because I'm too drunk to read previous posts, but I'm guessing it's the standard "Civ 4 is the mutt's nuts" that I see every time I fall down. Personally, I'd recommend Civ 3, since it's the one I've played the most over the last 5 years - I bought Civ 4, but just didn't enjoy it as much. Still, probably best to go with the masses. Probably.
