How to I decide who to vote for?

The whole point of this thread is because I want to make an informed vote, which seems to be what a lot of people think is best.

Labour a right wing party of idiots. The Conservatives are a right wing party of right people for rich people. The Lib Dems are a right wing part of liars. BNP... do i even need to explain? The Greens are a left wing party who actually care about the country a little.

I'll just add that make sure you make your own mind up. Never vote for or don't vote for someone just because someone else told you too, always do the leg work yourself so that your sure your making the right choice for yourself

Couldn't really put it better myself, have an e-cookie
hehe thanks :)

It's probably worthwhile for me to point out what some others have mentioned - there aren't just the three main political parties. There's a number of parties ranging from the left (generally being of an economic and social preference for public enterprise and collective responsibility) and the right (generally being of an economic and social preference for private enterprise and individual responsibility).

Something to be aware of is that, because of the voting system we have in the UK during general elections (First Past The Post - whoever gets the most votes in each constituency [political region], wins the right to represent the constituency completely), you may need to vote tactfully to ensure your interests are best served. For example, if you live in a constituency that normally votes 25% Labour, 30% Conservative, 20% Lib Dem and 25% other, and although you don't completely support either of the main parties, but a smaller party that is generally supporting private enterprise and individuality, then it would be a good idea to vote Conservative. This is because if you give your vote to a smaller party, even if they are ideologically similar to the Conservatives, the Conservative candidate might not get enough votes to beat the Labour candidate, and you will be represented by a Labour MP, who will be more opposed to your views than the Conservative one would be.

I hope that makes sense :p

Very one sided constituency and I'm gonna vote for the guy who will end up in third place, it's been the same party since world war 2. I'm gonna vote, just feel it's useless.

Perhaps but at least you are exercising your democratic right. It may be slightly out of place but here I'd think of the words of Mahatma Ghandi - "Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.".

I'm not sure what the best system is because there are negatives with proportional representation but this first past the post system just isn't fair.

A fairer system may be a combination of the two a la the Scottish system where you have first past the post for slightly over half the MSPs and then proportional representation (based on 8 regions) for the remainder. It's still not perfect but it does seem at least marginally fairer with better chance of representation for smaller parties.

First past the post system of voting is unfair, does mean it's very likely my vote will be useless.

I'm in a very similar situation, no chance that anyone but labour will ever get in so a wasted vote. However I do postal voting so there is no excuse not to vote, even if it isn't going to actually count...

Felt like telling my boss where to go today because he said if I voted Lib Dem I would be wasting a vote..

I'm firmly along the lines of voting for something I believe in.

While I have an 'above average' interested in politics, it has also offered me the not-so-unique position to realise that it doesn't really matter who you vote for, they all end up damaging us in one way or another. I don't vote. I don't vote because I don't want to have either Labour or Tory on a guilty conscience.

I respect democracy and freedom of choice too much to waste time casting random votes. I want the party I vote for to speak to me and my interests on a deeper level. I've yet to find such a party.

Labour right wing?

Elaborate kindly.

Indeed, the original Labour party was very much left wing. But just because they say they are here or there on the scale doesn't mean they are.

Can you explain what activities and policies of Labour put you on that course of thought? Simply put, what in your opinion makes them right wingers?

Considering every political party is generally a ton of ****, I've just sent a rather lengthy letter to my MP, Ken Clarke.

His response will determine my vote.

Tories will win, we will have call me Dave in power and his mates who will turn England into an amazing empire, rid the streets of crime and broken Britian and make everybody rich and employed.
