Basically I have just bought a 7 port USB and I currently have a 4 port...can I plug my mouse, external hdds, kboard etc into 7 port and plug into laptop (it has an external psu) then plug my 4 port USB hub into one of the ones left on the 7 hub and use that for memory sticks etc ....or will the 7 port not be able to provide power to the 4 port?
Thanks guys

i think the usb 2.0 spec means one port can daisy chain something stupid like 127 devices, but i seriously doubt you will practically get anywhere near that number unless every single device has its own power source.

long story short ... probably not.

Surely if you have both of these things, which it'll seem you do, it would be easier to... I don't know... try it?

this is correct. but remember that USB ARQ's work very similarly to PCI, if you have many devices on one main USB port, the devices on that chain will only get accessed 1/*how_ever_many_devices* per 8 milliseconds, which means mouse movement may be slowed, input lag on the keyboard etc...

i don't really recommend more than 8 devices per root hub.

i dont understand the need for a daisey chain, dont you have 2 spare usb ports to plug one in to each on your base?

so, 4 + 7, with daisy chaining = 10 extra ports. you get what, around 10 on an average pc? so your saying you need 20 odd usb ports? What the hell do you have? I mean, ive got a external hdd, a portable hdd, camera, phone, usb key, mouse, keyboard and i cant even think what else i would use over usb, except maybe a printer...but thats what a server is for ;)

So yea, just try it, or just have them both plugged into seperate host ports and that would give you the same overall ports. But what the hell are you using them all for? A million 1gb usb keys? just take the plunge and buy a portable drive they are > usb keys.
