age old question - Plasma or LCD??

oh yes i have owned both in the last 18months and plasma is far better for sport, movies every thing the only time i would recomend a lcd is if you have a very very bright living room.(ie if you live on the sun lol)

so you actually couldnt find the brightness control then? :p

I'm not being funny mate, but if you even attempted to set that lcd up correctly the brightness would be set at an acceptable level for viewing at home, exactly as your plasma should be. In fact, i'm going to go as far as saying LCD's have the upper hand in daylight, and i bet im far from the only person who'd say that.

That fact that your plasma handles motion and colour better is somewhat irrelevant - lcd's are not super bright if you bother to set them up, and neither are plasma's.

...and i own a pz80b. i wonder if you're sitting there right now, with your sunglasses on, screaming about your monitors super duper brightness while you read this post;)

i dont want to turn this into one of these flaming posts but
there is no in-between with lcd
its either too dark or too bright
there is no diffrence between the blacks so you lose detail in dark seens and you have the lovely backlight blead
the skin tones are unnatural
the motion handling is shocking even on the highend models you might as well smear vasaline all over the screen

im not saying plasma is perfect far from it i dont care what anyone says
my electric bills are around £40 a year higher and i have it drilled into my daughter to change channels every hour or so to stop the image retention
but plasma is the lesser of two evils and will be until OLED comes out which isnt going to be for at least 2 years

it shouldnt need to turn in to an argument, but the fact remains brightness isnt an issue when calibrated unless something is wrong with your display, be it lcd, plasma or anything else:)

I nipped into my local comet last night (not to buy from them but to look). They had the 50G10 and the 37G10 but not the 42. I watched the HD demo on the 37g10 for a bit which was a footy match. Picture looked amazing....until the players were running. It seemed they were ghosting. Is this a badly setup TV/Demo or a nature of them? I left hoping it was the demo they had on because when some F1 footage came on, i didn't notice it. That's not to say it wasn't there though.

The 37" G10 has an LCD screen, the 50" G10 has a plasma screen.

Panasonic Plasma 42" that I bought from a main highstreet retailer with 5 years warranty. It's got a fantastic picture, looks great and was only £550 notes. It doesn't weight as much as a small family hatchback like my old 32" crt telly either. You can Viera link it up to a panny home theatre system too for ultra laziness

Prices of G10's may come down once the G20's are selling well.. I'd hold out a bit longer and see what the prices are like in a month or two. Oh and Plasma all the way.

Not sure i want to wait too much. Mate of mine works in comet so if he can get me one, it will be for £640. I can't afford to pay £800 ish for a TV at the moment.

I Know M&S had an offer on at this price and Richer sounds have 6 in the Uk at this price also.

Dont think they'll go much lower than this.

I bought a Panasonic 37X10B plasma after following the advice on this forum. When i went into the shops the LCD's looked great, but i decided on the Plasma and boy am i glad i did.

It is absolutely fantastic. When i watch LCD's now, they just seem washed out and super bright. I couldn't be happier with it - the only thing is, i wish i'd got the 42 inch one now! :p

Personally I went for a Plasma as to me it looked better and suited the room conditions.

I find the image on LCDs overly sharp and processed (we have one in the bedroom), I prefer the softer more natural image of a plasma. Also note this does not mean a plasma has 'less detail' just because everything isn't razor sharp, just like real life :p

But everyone is different, go see some properly setup and make an informed decision as to which you prefer :)

But make sure it's a plasma :p

Plasma.

I used to have LCDs until last year when I bought a Pioneer Kuro plasma (as I'd read they were being discontinued), the difference in black levels and detail is profound. I'll go back when LED backlighting is proven to beat it as it does tend to drink the electricity.

Setting up the display is also highly important. I turn off EVERY image processing "enhancement", and start from the beginning. It's now been professionally calibrated, but I'm amazed that some people run the default settings with the maximum amount of sharpness :shudder:

I've noticed a thread on AV forums where people have been playing with the settings and have posted them up. One guy is supposed to be a bit of a guru at it and the settings are meant to be ace. We'll see.....good advice about the enhancement settings though.

I may just let my amp do the scaling and 'enhancements'.

Got the G10 in the end. Boxed and new for £640. I couldn't justify the extra £300+ for the G20 and the 42" panel is massive in my lounge so the 50" wasn't an option. Only got it yesterday and watch a few bits with the 'out of the box' settings and it's pretty dam good to be fair. Need to tweek the settings now to get the best from it.

What? Assuming the models started with TX-P then they are both plasmas. The OP could have done well by providing both halves of the model numbers to be fair.

You find me a 37" plasma G10 and I'll eat my shoes!

The only 37" plasmas made by Panasonic last year where the C10 and X10.

The 37" G10 only came with an LCD screen.

2009 Panasonic Plasma line up:

G10 Series
Incorporating a host of high-picture-quality functions, the G10 Series includes core VIERA models that offer 1080 lines moving-picture resolution and contrast of over 2,000,000:1 (native 40,000:1). In terms of networking, G10 models offer VIERA Link and the VIERA Image Viewer, giving viewers easy new ways to enjoy beautiful pictures. Three plasma models will be available: 42” (TX-P42G10), 46” (TX-P46G10), and 50” (TX-P50G10).
