I'm looking for a bench and a set of dumbbells for less than £100, ideally less than than 70 or 80 as I'll need to buy some more plates too.

Any suggestions? :)

Gumtree?

Failing that this bench isn't expensive. I think you'd be lucky to get a decent set of dumbells that cheap though, depending on what weight you want them to go up too.

There's a set of York dumbells on Amazon. They come with the following:

4 x 0.5kg discs
4 x 1.25kg discs
4 x 2.5kg discs

I'm probably never going to use the 0.5 plates but I'll be using the 1.25 and the 2.5's so I might get those and then add more plates later if needed. The benches that I have been looking at seem to be starting at around the £45 mark for a half decent one so maybe it'd be better getting one of those second hand. Weight wise I'm not exactly going to be competing for the strongman events! They are mainly going to be low weight, high reps so maybe 8-10KG per arm.

Someone posted a link to a set in Argos, I think it was £60, and included barbell and about 40kg, plus bench, will try and find it for you

Do you know what kind of routine your going for and what rep-range you want to be performing?

Only ask because for curls, raises and that kind of thing im sure 10kg per side will be fine, especially if your new to it.I had trouble curling 5s the first week I went to the gym :( granted It was last excersise of the routine, but its somthing my training partner likes to remind me of.

For bench press I would guess your likly to need some more weight.
Like youve said though, can always get more plates.

You're buying a bench and you're not using it for bench presses? What are you using it for then? Weighted crunches and stuff?

It will be used for presses, but you were a bit vague when you said bench press as there's so many different types. I'm going to be using it for flat presses, inclined presses, shoulder presses, flies and reverse flies, lat raises, rows, extensions... we could be here for ages but the bench is going to be used to work as many muscles as possible, not just presses. :)

I'm not using them for bench pressing though.

Wtf tbh.

In any case, you'll need more weight very soon for all of those types of press that you mentioned.

And by the way, a bench press is a bench press. An incline bench press is an incline bench press. When someone says to you "I'm going to do bench press", I would assume they meant flat unless they specifically said shoulder, incline, decline, etc.

I think you need to calm down a bit and stop criticizing and analyzing everything that everyone says, no wonder you frequent the motors forum.

And yes, I agree with you, if someone said a bench press then I'd assume they meant a flat press, lying on their back which is probably the excercise I'm least likely to use on the bench with dumbbells because I see it pointless bench pressing 15 - 20 Kilos when I can just travel to the gym and use 50-60 Kilos. The reason for not doing these at home is because I don't really need a bar and other extra plates and the 20KG that I'll get with these dumbbells is more than adequate for light excercise / toning.

Chill out.

I am very chilled thanks, it's Friday. What on earth makes you think I'm not chilled? Because I pointed out that you said you weren't doing bench presses on them, then all of a sudden you actually were?

You can press 50 - 60 kgs, yet you are going to be at home on your bench pressing 20Kg for a bit of "toning"? You can say I'm being vague, but it's taken a whole lot to get anything out of you in terms of wtf you're planning to actually do, and you still haven't explained yourself properly.

Adios cabron.

That's because I asked for a cheapish set of dumbbells and a bench, I didn't ask you to give me your opinion on my choice of workout. I'm using the gym for bench pressing, the bench that I buy myself will be used for other types of presses, and i'll be using a bar at my local gym for bench pressing and cardio work not a set of dumbbells. Not that I asked for anything other than a hint at prices / where do buy. You just decided to take the thread completely off topic and you've actually added zero worthwhile input so thanks for that and perhaps you'd like to go back to motors now. ;)

If you feel that what you are doing on the bench is irrelevant to the eventual choice of the bench, then...well.

I don't recall saying that. You asked me why I was buying a bench if I wasn't intending to do bench presses on it when a bench in fact has many more uses than just allowing and aiding simple bench presses. Don't you agree? It's almost a necessity unless you expect me to use a dining chair! :p
