Using an old dvd-rom drive from my old pc. In bios, I have ide:dvdrom, cd-rom and hd as boot order. I've tried swapping dvdrom and cdrom but same result. Win 7 won't boot from dvd. On the monitor, it asks me to put in bootable media which is the dvd in the drive and either nothing happens or it asks me to do it again. Turning the pc off and on with the dvd already in, I just get a flashing - on the upper left corner.

Not sure where to go from here. If need be, I might buy a new dvd drive.

edit - just checked. after leaving the monitor on the flashing - for a bit, it says couldn't find bootmgr.

Sounds like the old drive is just too worn out to read the disc :(

Have you tried connecting the DVD drive to another SATA/IDE port?

It connects via ide ribbon and there's only 1 ide ribbon port on the motherboard. Think i'm gonna go ahead and just buy a new dvd drive. Any recommendations?

Any drive will do the trick. I personally recommend any Samsung drive as I've not had any problems with them and they are especially good for reading/recovering scratched discs and ripping music. This cheap one will do the trick nicely :)

I had problems installing windows 7 onto my computer then i figured it out, my hard drive was the reason. not sure why it wouldnt install on it, no errors or anything on it either, ah well i preffer xp anyhow

Looks very nice. Good price too. One of the review says this -

'This particular drive has a known but rare fault where it won't recognise Windows 7 discs (Every other type of disc reads perfectly).'

Got me a bit worried. Is there any substance to this?

timmymeuk1, how did you figure out your hd was the reason?

While that is a worry, I think that particular person was just unfortunate with the specific drive they recieved; I've not had any problems with any of the Samsung DVD drives around my house. :)

I had this same problem yesterday, unfortunately i couldn't find a solution and as my HD was still under warranty i RMAed it to Western Digital.
