My car broke down 3 weeks ago (clutch + pedal box problem) and was towed to a garage specified by myself.

Whilst in for repair, the garage phoned to tell me that the wiring loom beneath the steering column was burnt/melted and the indicators weren't working.

They've had an auto electrician in whos said its serious and will cost between £400 - £500 to get sorted.

I've had no issues with the indicators prior to it going in for repair at the garage. They say the pedal box may have damaged the wiring loom when it broke or shoddy work by a previous garage may be to blame.

Do I have any choice other than to cough up and get it fixed, or are the garage responsible and trying to fob me off? For what its worth, the bill BEFORE the electrical work is over £830.

Can you get an independent to look at it and suggest if the damage is from a failure or someone like the garage causing it? Otherwise would be a bit difficult to prove no prior fault?

I would at least take a look at what they are claiming as it is rather a lot of money to fix!

I'd say balls to them, probably the squeaky voiced intern buggered up and they're trying to bill you for it.
You sure the indicators were working before you put it in?

Definitely don't take it lying down.

I'd say this is rubbish. It burnt out while they were working on it mechanically, its hard to blame other garages unless your car has clearly been bodged left right and centre... which I doubt?

I haven't taken the dash off a Seat but i doubt the indicator wiring looms are routed down and around your pedal box..

normally in most cars there are two holes either end of the dash/firewall that to go through to the engine bay. the right hand/dash part of the loom may well route near the pedal box through the firewall, but you'd have to break it off mentally or thrash about like a child to start to damage wiring nearby.

Have a look if any wires are damaged behind trim in the drivers footwell, along the sill etc.

If the wires have melted around the steering column and there is no damage in the footwell, they are having you.

Get down to the garage and check out the wiring for yourself, also take some pics of the damage and post them here so that the forum massive can offer advice.
