WARNING: S|A - SemiAccurate wrong about Nvidia 480GTX power use

Surely that's very similar to the GTX280/285? Don't see what all the fuss is about. It'll almost certainly have a 2D clock mode that uses minimal power too.

The first 280gtx was 236watt load, and theres a reason the 295gtx wasn't made until the die shrink and significant power drop.

This is now set to be 280W, they couldn't make a dual gpu version when the gpu was 236W........

THe other problem being 2x 5870 cores, in a 5970, will destroy a 480gtx, and those two cores will cost AMD significantly less to produce than the single 480gtx.

More power is worse in terms of already designed boxes though, as guys like Dell will have been running tests to get basically as close as possible in terms of cost to build the right computer for it, heavy testing, using the lowest possible priced psu, case, fans, noise and then running them for stability testing.

Though judging by the likely supply of Fermi's they won't exactly be making lots of cash through Fermi sales to Dell anyway both on lack of actual numbers of cards available, and the fact they will be selling them at a pretty huge loss.

Got to say that this is getting depressing !!

Apart from its release on the 26th is there any good news for the standard user/gamer ref. Fermi out there ?

Only hope now is , it appears, the magician:top hat: nice fluffy bunny routine. :o:(

To be honest, Nfail should just get rid of fermi and not release it, it's turning in a whole load of fail at the moment.

here you go partners your shipment of Nfail has arrived.

Pft. Sounds terrible. Looks like i'm gonna be holding out for a shrink. I'll wait for the performance figures first though cos if it performs, I'll still get it as heat and power ain't an issue for me as it's going under water.

tbh i dont know why im waiting for the launch before deciding what gpu im getting next, fermi doesnt look too good compared to the competition.

I'd say the main issue is staying inside PCI-E spec. With bad yields you can still sell some cards, but having a Mars bar type card as your main SKU won't endear you to the likes of Dell etc. ;)
