I love running on treadmills and have room in the garage for one which would be a lot more practical than going to the gym. Anyone give me some advice on which type to look out for.

Going to be looking for 2nd hand models to hopefully get a bit cheaper.

Any advice on what to get and how to get a bargain would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Decent ones cost lots of money. Buy the best that you can afford, hopefully that's over £500.

Just before christmas I bought a NordicTrack C2500 and it's bloody awesome.
This treadmill came out as one of the better models in these tests - http://www.treadmill-running-machine-review.co.uk/compare_treadmills.html
It's an absolute joy to run on and is solid as a rock.
The display is brilliant and you can even run against 4 computer generated competitors.
As soon as the weather warms up a bit I will get back out on the road but I really can't be arsed battling with the elements anymore so this treadmill does me fine.
I've mounted a flatscreen TV in front of it and I play films to keep me interested.

What's wrong with the pavement?

Pavement is the SINGLE WORST thing to run on, tarmac is 100 times less bad, grass is good if you're not a new runner, with weak supporting/stablising muscles its not good as you can hit uneven/hidden holes and really damage yourself. Pavement is made from concrete slabs with entirely no give, its why people go out at silly times to run, so they can run semi safely on the road. I know quite a few people who go out at 5am, have a run, go home and chill out for a while before work and will do the same at the weekend if they are running. Treadmills are pretty decent, decent ones anyway, for reducing impact and keeping joints from hurting.

Trust me, cheap treadmills are useless for running on. They wobble about and feel like they will break any moment. This is running a treadmill I bought for £400 3 years ago.

You need something that is big, steardy and does incline. £750-1000 would get you a pretty good tred.

AS he said, cheap ones are usually pretty dire, and will also often have a much shorter tread, also with lower speeds, eventually you'll find the 10-12kph limit on cheap treadmills very limiting.

I ended up with a great deal on a York Diamond, 302T or something, forget quite what, decent treadmill, my second choice, or first for the price were Norditrack ones.

I'd suggest something like the cheaper Norditrack as a bare minimum in terms of price/quality, and theres lots of good choices further up in price if you can swing it.

Any older solid ones available? Price is a bit of an issue and im trying to search around for a bargain. :D

Would the older versions like 2000 or 1000 be ok?

I nearly had the C2000 but the C2500 was more of a bargain.
Speed and incline are the same but the motor is a little weaker on the C2000.
The display isn't as good but to be honest I never look at it now except for the major data.
It is a solid machine and you won't be disappointed.

I had mine from here - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NordicTrack-c...ciseFitness_Treadmills_JN?hash=item2c5388e6ba

Do you live close to me because you could come and try mine?

I used to run lot's on a treadmill and found it really enjoyable but there came a point where i started outside and i have never really looked back since!

Treadmill really bores me to tears now :p

Is there any reason you don't like running outside? Im just curious because i have never heard of anyone wanting to go on a treadmill more than running outside :D

I've been running for years through all seasons and in every type of weather and it gets to a point where it isn't enjoyable.
I can now run in the comfort of my garage while watching a film or listening to music but even then the cold around December & January was ruining it for me.
As soon as it warms up I'll be out again but at least I now have the comfort of an excellent running machine.

I guess its almost like meditation for me when im running on a treadmill. I enjoy the peace and it helps me think. So i find it a very creative time without any distractions.

If i go for a run outside I have to be more aware of my surrounds and I dont relax as much. Might sound stupid but its how my crazy mind works :p

No i dont live close but thanks for the offer.

Whats the NordicTrack EXP1000 like? One on the bay for £125 at the moment?

What are manual treadmills like? I have never tried one but are they any good?

Manual treadmills are utterly crap, I'm sure some store will have one on display, jump on it and regret even trying one.

Because they are powered by your movement they basically constantly speed up and slow down, its jerky, uncomftable, un-natural and they slip a lot. They'll also be made of pee poor metal that if you try anything as insane as, jogging, or something, will fall apart in no time.

Some things you really do have to spend some money on to be worth it, a decent treadmill, (decent versions seem to start around £500 + new), will last a heck of a lot longer, give you a decent motor so you don't get better at running then get stuck at 8kph or something daft, won't slip and slide and be generally unsafe to use and will have a far better sprung deck to give a little cushioning, but not to much. A couple cheaper ones I tried in a showroom were all about the "cushioning" and it was like trying to run on a trapoline, very jarring and uncomftable.
