Need good MMORPG recommendations

It's the US version you'd have to go for for D&D, but it's pretty good. It's not a normal MMO by any means though, very dependant on grouping, and you gain experience only by completing missions, not generally by killing stuff. It's therefore possible to spend an hour in a mission, fail it, and have nothing to show for your time.

So while it's not very solo friendly, it is an extremely decent and polished game. The ability to multiclass makes progressing very interesting too.

Give it a go, but don't try to solo it, it will just frustrate you.

Not liking Lord of the Rings Online at all, it seems and plays like a cheap World of Warcraft ripoff, no offense intended.

Edit: Going to try EQ2 now, I really like the way they handled downloading - I can actually "be in the game" and make my character while it streams resources, the main download was blazing fast, so fast that I thought it was just downloading the launcher which would download the actual game.

Which server did you pick?

No idea, I'm playing a Fae Wizard (for fun) on the only non-PvP green server (light load).

I must say, the options menu COMPLETELY blew me away with the sheer number of options it provided me with, and the interface looks very well-done and clean.

Must say I'm even more impressed with the effort spent behind making this game customizable than with WoW. (No idea if it supports addons/macros/scripting though, in that aspect WoW is still the top of the line).

WoW - Strong pve/pvp
Lotro - Strong pve
Warhammer Online - Strong pvp
Aion
Age of Conan
D&D online

pretty much what I can think of for fantasy.

Update: I'm playing on The Bazaar, name's Lorknirn.

I find the actual ingame experience to be a bit out-of-tune, like I can't really put myself into the character as much as I'd like to.

It's also often a bit unclear as to where I have to go and what I have to do, so I don't really like it as much as WoW. Gameplay feels okay, a bit generic though.

Edit: Aion looks amazing, and it running off CryEngine is promising to boot. I want to try it, however I can't seem to figure out whether there is a free trial or not? I couldn't find anything on the website, but some forum posts mentioned a free trial of 3 days / level 7.

You might as well not bother trying any others. If WoW was your first MMO, and you're only willing to play fantasy you're just not gonna enjoy any of the others as much. Let your sub expire, leave it a month or two then go back to WoW.

Or be a real man and download EvE. :p

Hmm.. WoW was actually more like my 5th RO (after having been addicted to several before that).

I actually enjoy Ragnarok Online more than WoW even today, but it's just been completely played to exhaustion - a clear indicator of this would be for example the presence of several (self-made) fully-featured damage and modifier calculating programs on your mobile phone. :/

Aw, is this one of those threads where you pretend to give other mmo's a go, give em up after a few hours because they're not exactly like WoW, and then proclaim how great WoW is and how rubbish everything else in the whole world is?

I hate those threads.

No one suggested the unlimited trial of Warhammer Online limited to max level 10?

I know its main forte is open realm vs. realm and scenarios, but the public quests and being able to explorer the whole original game area at low level might give you a good indication of if it's your thing. That's if EQ2 becomes stale, as a lot of the content from previous expansions is deserted.

One thing you should be prepared for with Aion.

There is no avoiding PvP. You cannot simply run about with your pvp "flag" off, as there is no flag system. You are always attackable once you are beyond the early "safe" levels. Enemy players, can and will kill you while you are pveing.

Just thought you should be aware of that as some people really dont like being ganked whilst they are trying to pve.

This is right, though there is no XP loss if you are killed by a member of the opposition. So basically by the time you're dead and get back there's normally a group of players killing the person who killed you - so free Abyss points etc. Not a bad game, quite enjoying it, though for a casual player like me it's hard to level as a lot of the quests are grinding for hours. Don't mind sometimes but it can be annoying. Getting groups is reasonably easy for most quests and it is a fun game :) Pvp in the Abyss is where it's at though!

You practically picked the worst server.

If you're a Euro, either pick Splitpaw or Runnyeye.

Also, you can't use bots/scripts or the like since it's against the EULA, they are quite strict against anything that helps un attended gameplay. You can however, customise the fluff out of the UI (eq2interface.com) - most people don't stick with the default UI hehe.

Anyway, I have played Eve, Vanguard, Age of Conan and Aion then went back to EQII because they weren't as good....though Eve is different and if it wasn't for the fact I got bored of it then it would be up there with the best.

Everquest 3 is in development apparently. No one has any idea what it'll be like.

The original game from 1999 to 2001 ate up my life like candy. I wouldn't recommend it today, it's not the same game.

Oh I'm looking forward to that, I enjoy pvp-everywhere servers (at least once I get the hang), will be awesome to run around killing others when I'm geared up myself.

80% downloaded.

Dear God, really? I'd love an Everquest 3!
