Now please bear with me, as the information I currently have on this car is very limited. But, here's what I do current know:

Reg: 52 Plate (registration date 6th December 2002)
Car: Audi A6 Avant SE
Colour: Blue
Engine: 2.5ltr V6 turbo Diesel (163bhp 310Nm)
Transmission: Automatic
Mileage: 120k +
Condition: Exact condition currently unknown
Number of owners: 2 - First owner until 19th September 2006
Price: £1.5k

Now at the moment I don't know the following information:

Service History: I have no idea about this at the moment, but am trying to find out and should have more info on it later today.

What I would like to know, if there are any Audi boff's on here, how reliable these engines are and what the auto gearbox is like on them as well. What else should I be looking out for on this particular model of car?

Now before anyone starts, I know that this will very much depend on its service history and how its been looked after, but Im just after a general impression of these really.

Also, having never owned (have driven) an automatic before, what are the key things to look out, check, listern for, feel for when road testing one?

PS: Im not expecting this sort of car, at this kind of price, to be much good but there is a good chance that it could be.

Thanks in advance, I will update though as more information comes through on it.

The reason its so cheap is that its a trade in car, and the garage just want to shift it asap...as far as I know.

And the reason I dont have any info on it at the moment is because a friend has spotted it and is in the process of finding out all the details for me.

Still doesn't figure the garage must know its hiding some mechanical gremlins so they want shot of it off the books, my moiney is on it needing a clutch / flywheel and perhaps some sort of turbo problem.

Why does the garage what to shift it quick? If there's money in it then they'll want a piece of it. If it was a dog when they took it in and have only just realised, then thats why they are getting shot of it cheap.

Am going to get a mechanic to give it a thorough look over so dont worry. And I know the old adage of it the deal looks to good to be true, then it normally is.

All Im doing is trying to cover my basis and find out all the information I can about this type of car in advance. So any help, would be greatly appreciated.

Can we just forget about the price of it for now, and actually try and get some helpful information please.

You could easily pay that for a Focus/Fiesta of that age so to expect a car 3/4 classes bigger with a premium badge/brand to cost the same and be a good deal is crazy, especially at a garage. I'd expect it to be a total shed.

Im expecting it to be a total shed aswell, in all honesty. But, lets just say its not and Ive found a good bargin. What should I be looking for on this car?

Lets assume for one minute its a miracle and a decent car for the money, which it almost certainly wont buy.

If you are in the market for a cheap car can you afford to run a big V6 Audi?

If you reply with 'but its diesel' I will scream.

What's the point?

You know that there's going to be a major repair cost associated with the car, whether its the engine, turbo or gearbox, clutch, or something else that's going to be pricey.

Do you really think a 2nd hand car dealer hasn't looked over the car mechanically, and hasn't worked out the risks and potential cost involved?

He's punting it on to you because he doesn't run the risk of a strastospheric bill.

But its a diesel.......:D

I am aware of the potential running costs for one of these things...

Road tax: Band J = £215.00
Insurance: Circa £400/500 per annum (33yrs old with full no claims and accidents or convictions in a B rated area)
Fuel: 70 litre tank (may get 40mpg motorway cruising)
Tyres: £60/70 a corner (205/55 R 16 W)

I am also aware of ancillary costs as well as well as what anything major might potential cost to repair (bearing in mind that I have several qualified mechanics as friend so anything major would only cost the parts (German and Swedish are round the corner from where I live) and a few beers.

I am not going into this blind what so ever and am totally expecting this to be a POS, as I keep saying. But I also keep asking for people to look beyond the price, and give me some helpful information about this car.

If that were the case, the garage would've given the previous owner LESS than £1500 for it, which should tell you everything you need to know about it.

Wouldn't fitting a gearbox with say 80k on the clock that had been used for 4 years been false economy anyway as it's likely to cause problems?

Potentially yes, although a 2nd hand gearbox would come with a 3 month warranty. But there again, if its been looked after should it cause any problems?
