Whats your opinion about graphics cards pushing 3d gaming?

With Fermi cards having "3d vision surround" technology. Do you think this is a complete and utter waste or do you support them trying to push 3d gaming?

If find it a waste...a lot of people out there probably can just afford to spend £400 on the latest card but cant afford another £300 for a monitor what supports 3d ( or £900 if you want the full surround with 3 monitors that support 3d ) Then basically you just have a £400 card only capable of doing half of the special features. I myself am going to spend atleast £400 on a new fermi card if there any good but im going to regret it cause i cant afford a monitor to use all of its 3d surround features. But thats only if they are worth the £400

I dont see any future to 3d gaming. Yes nviida do hold some lan 3D competitions what i would like to do. But i dont see 3d at home really making a good cut in gaming. I think this will raise prices in games (there to high already) and cause more problems for game editors.

Yes its interesting but i would prefer a £400 card that delivers massive performance or £200 on a card as powerful as the new 480gtx but with less features..
ATi have a lot of features and have good performance for the price. All the features are accessible to everyone. You can run eye infinity on a budget.I dont know if ATI do any 3d stuff. Maybe thats why there cards are relatively cheap for the performance. I just hope the 3d surround on the new fermi cards is the reason why there prices might be so high (im saying might because theres no official prices. Iv heard they are £400 )

*prices are estimate

3D gaming existed ages ago, I can even run legacy Dx9 games with full 3D support (Unreal Tournament etc).
You don't even have to change the game itself either, just the driver.

Look up iZ3d if you want to try it out (works on both ATI and Nvidia), has plenty of options for different types (dual projector, cross-eyed, colored, shutter etc. all supported), I use Optimized Red/Cyan with cheapo paper red/cyan glasses from god knows where.

So I wouldn't say the cards themselves are pushing anything in that aspect, it's more a matter of modern cards being powerful enough to actually render 120fps, but I doubt any "special" hardware APIs or similar will significantly change the gaming scene, games that support 3D do it already without needing any silly new pixel shader features. (Granted I've only seen Red/Cyan support actually coded into games though, but a simple driver update would be all it takes to enable 3D gaming for all types)

if there was some way of doing it without the glasses i'd happily buy into it, obviously as long as it was supported in a wide range of games.

it seems like a logical step, but i feel it'll be short lived.

the sooner we get to the Matrix style of connecting to an artificial world the better :)

Im mostly meaning pushing it further like 3d surround. Is there any point in pushing it to the public who probably cant afford it? £400 on the card where it will only use the performance not its features. A waste. Maybe another card what you can put in sli what will make it 3d compatible

Yeah that's basically EyeFinity + iZ3d. I don't think they're "pushing" anything, just doing their best to catch up.
Your argument is the same with EyeFinity though, since not everybody can afford 3+ monitors. Then again not everybody can afford a 5870 or above either, so I think they're doing the high-end consumer market a big favor in releasing it on their newer cards. For midrange there's always 57* or 4*.

eyeinfinity was designed for 3 monitors the same resolution. If you where on mega budget you can pick up a 19" for £80. so 3 will be £240. People spend that on 1 monitor but still...you can use 2 monitors :)

There you go, 3d surround vision for 240 notes. (60 Hz 3D is still possible, although might be slightly annoying. 60 Hz red/cyan etc work perfectly however)

I worked this out, for 3d Vision surround you will always need TWO high-end GPU parts which will always cost £230-250 for decent frame rates, call it £500 right there.

People will want three 22-24'' 120hz monitors which at current prices are £250-300 so call it £900 there.
£1400
UH OH, that's a lot of money, that's assuming your case and PSU are up to the task, and that you don't need to buy an SLI mobo.

You can take this view; modern ported games aren't even really pushing our GPU's in most cases, if you are a PC gaming enthusiast, this route offers you a means to use all that power for a more immersive experience.
If it makes you happy and you can afford it, do it I say, live once well...

Lastly people spend thousands upgrading say mountain bikes. I love biking but love PC hardware more, if I slowly upgrade my setup I can have three monitors and if the 3D side works then great, if not I still got three monitor gaming:D

My ASUS GF3 Ti500 came with 3D goggles and I remember Half-Life was one of the supported games, supposedly.

The goggles did nothing, though. :(

I still have the card and goggles. Might chuck it in a spare rig and try it again...
