Maybe someone tell me if everything is so illegal then why VM gives you free usenet access (for VM customers)?

To me its like, pay for my broadband £25 and then use usenet for free and download all the latest movies and games for free. We host it free for you.

Don't you find it ironic that and IP provider gives you access to all that for free?

I saw this and it really annoyed me ! ok so their aim is to stop people downloading illegally but do they then suddenly think everyone is going to go out and starting buying music again? I wish them good luck with that one because I don't see it happening and certainly wont convince me.

So? You're forgetting the measurement (and logged) time.

Yes i may have had said IP at the time illegal downloading occured, but prove that 1 of the PC's on home network has said file.

All ISP's see ((unless using packet inspection) & correct me if i am wrong) is packets going from 1 server to your PC, and not what is in those packets.

yes I do find isp newsgroup access confusing, in theory I could download all the music I want from the free service, which presumably they pay for. I don't know who would be breaking the copywrite

All my external IP proves is that my modem is connected to the internet.

Correct. Someone could have broken in to your wireless network (particularly if it's WEP-secured or, even worse, not secured at all) or, in my case, downloaded a file illegally through my SSH server (fortunately, I know that the two people with access wouldn't do so under any circumstances - only one even knows how to do so). It's ridiculous to slap punishment on the bill payer.

But the bloke appeared to access the rooter by the admin page which 99% of people won't know exists.

And?

It still isn't linked to my computer.

All my external IP proves is that my modem is connected to the internet.

It is linked to the bill payer though.

If you use torrent to download illegaly, everyone knows exactly what IP address is downloading that torrent. The owner of the material being distributed can then get a court order for the ISP to give your name and address.

But they don't have to do this to get you disconnected. Essentially it is guilty until proven innocent. That's bad, OK?

Very. Unfortunately, whilst the film and music industries are applying such pressure, it's what we will end up with. The FOSS is/promotes piracy nonsense is another issue they are causing which irks me severely.

I'm not sure that's a price point that the media industry would be happy with. Personally I think micropayments is the way forward.

I agree, and I think I would be happy with that. A lot of people who download illegally, when surveyed, say that if such content was easier to get legally over the internet, then they would most likely pursue legal means of acquiring it instead of downloading illegally. I can't say that all of them would be honest about that, but I can't see the honest folk being in the minority provided pricing is reasonable.

Try explaining SSH to housewives! :D

I did, it took a while >.<
